Shortridge was the first to enter the semi-final round with a 35 to 20 victory over Acton In a quarter final tilt late Friday afternoon. The Blue Devils held a lead of 1* to 5 at half time and with reserves in *he lineup in the latter part of the fray still were able to outscore their county opposition in the last half. Button with five field baskets was best for Shortridge, while Myers with „ four field baskets and the same number of free throw's, carried the * big burden for Acton. Cards Down Redskins With big Johnny Townsend unable to miss the hoop in the first half, when he connected six times. Tech piled up a first half lead of 25 to 8 over Warren Central Friday night and coasted to a 34 to 20 win with reserves wearing the green , colors in the last half. The big dope upset came with the reversal in form by Manual against Southport. The Redskins held a one-point victory over the Cardinals in regular season play to their credit, but once the battle Friday * night was under way it was hard to ' realize it. , Coach Scotts county champs whipped the ball around the court in stellar form and Goins connected with the hoop four times from the field. Schaefer twice and Stull once along with some free throws to give Southport an 18-to-3 lead at halftime. A field goal by Wagoner and a free throw by Nackenhorst were Manuals only scores. Manual refused to quit, and consistent foul line shooting by Wagener, who tossed in five free throws i a long with two field baskets, kept ithe Manual five battling and it w'as Rtt in the fray when Southport was able to ease up with reserve players. Hornets Are Dropped The nightcap between Beech Grove and New Augusta kept the customers there until the final gun. The Hornets were favorites, but they finally were edged out, 28 to 23. Houghland with three baskets kept Beech Grove in the battle in the first half, but Parker. Negro forward. Duncan and Meyers were able to give the winners a 14-to-ll edge at rest time. Three field goals and a free throw bv Fults in the second half, after he had gone scoreless in the first half, was the margin for the winners although the other trio kept up their good work when Beech Grove threatened and came up to within two points of a tie at one time. In first round games Friday Beech Grove, after trailing 14-7 at half time, spurted and conquered Lawrence 27-21 when Hart and White, stars for the losers, were forced from the game via the personal foul route Parke and Duncan with six and five field goals, respectively, gave j?w Augusta a 38-27 win over Oakwndor. Higgins is rated as the coming outstanding hot corner guardian in the major leagues. He had a good season in 1933 and was a timely hitter. Doc Cramer, young outfielder, accepted terms last night. He refused to report for the first spring training workout here. Mack said today his offer of $15,000 to Foxx is final. Jimmy is demanding $25,000 for the coming campaign. Whenever Johnny Townsend, Tech’s star center, is blockaded by two or three men of an opposing team, keep your eyes peeled for some trickery. The big Tech pivot man has a weird knack of skipping the ball to other members of the Tech quintet to let them pile up the score while he is roundedThis trick has made Hutt, Hair and Woerner all threats to any Tech opponent that decides it’s worthwhile to use a couple of men to keep Johnny covered up. The east side lads were reported to be in fine shape today as they w r ent into battle in the sectional semi-finals against Shortridge’s fine team.

Mai Stevens Takes Up Gridiron Job at N. Y. U.
Violets Will Maintain Old Policy of Football De-Emphasis. BY JACK CUDDY United Press Staff Correspondent NEW YORK. March 3 —Dr. Marvin A. (Mai) Stevens, one of the swellest fellows in the football business. seems to have jumped from the frying pan into the fire. Mai Stevens, who was head coach at Yale for five years and president of the American Football Coaches' Association for the usual one-year term, has accepted the appointment of head football coach at New York university. He succeeds Howard Cann, who resigned on Feb. 1 (after a bombardment from the alumni), but who remains with N. Y. U. as assistant director of physical training and basketballl coach. Cann is sending his unbeaten Violet quintet against the unbeaten C. C. N. Y. five tonight. Cann was a victim of gridiron circumstances. He succeeded Chick Meehan late in 1931, when the school turned ‘ lily white,” swept by a wave of reform, and decided to do away with b*r-time football; with proselyting, subsidizing and the like. Under the de-emphasis program Cann found it difficult to win football games in 1932 and 1933, so he resigned under pressure. It seems the alumni demanded winning football teams regardless of any reformations. In announcing last night that Dr. Stevens had been appointed, the chairman of the board of athletic control. Professor Philip O. Badger, emphasized that N. Y. U. had not changed its policy regarding deernphasis. In accepting the N. Y. U. job Stevens said: 'T am heartily in sympathy with the university’s present athletic policy. I expect the squad to play to win and to exhibit a rugged and intelligent brand of football.’ Friends figure that at least five teams on the 1934 N. Y. U. schedule may cause Stevens some embarrassment. They are; West Virginia Wesleyan. Lafayette. Carnegie Tech, Rutgers and Fordham.
