DICKENS' STORY TELLING ABILITY IS REMEMBERED Nebraskan Once Worked in London Residence of Great Author. NEBRASKA CITY, Neb., March 2.—Fred Hillier. who perhaps is the only person is America to have been intimately acquainted with the household of Charles Dickens, today recalled the great English novelist as an adept “spinner of yarns.’’ Mr. Hillier, now 86 and secretary of the Nebraska city board of education, as a youth of 19 years was a member of the Dickens house staff at the time the writer was producing “The Life of Our Lord," which is to be published for the first time, starting Monday. . He looked forward eagerly to reading the Biblical versions which *Mr. Dickens wrote exclusively for his children. Although Mr. Hillier was privileged to sit with the family before the fireplace to listen to his master tell stories, this masterpiece was reserved for private family asst mblies. Dickens, Mr. Hillier recalls, was an incomparable story teller, often “spinning yarns" drawn from experiences of his poverty-stricken youth. His family and servants comprised the audience gathered about the democratic fireplace on long winter evenings. Asa youth. Mr. Hillier was with a London firm that did work at the Dickens home. He served as a footman. One of his tasks was cleaning the great study where the master composed such pieces of literature as David Copperfield. Pickwick Papers. A Tale of Two Cities and Oliver Twist. Overhearing the master tell of a wonderful new country, America, which Dickens had toured in 1857 and 1858. Mr. Hillier decided to emigrate. He left the Dickens home, came to America, where he settled first in New England. He worked his way to the Nebraska prairies, to Ft Kearney, then a frontier post. la’er he came here. Much of Dicken's storehouse of info .nation, Mr. Hillier says, was drawn from his experiences as a reporter on London newspaper. Mr. Hillier is not undecided as to his favorite author. He can point proudly to one of the most complete Dickens libraries in the state. LARGEST TELESCOPE LENS WORK DELAYED Pouring Will Not Take Place for Several Weeks. Bn 1 nitrd Press CORNING. N. Y .
