peace had something to do with the cancellation. However, the Nazis said that their "ultimatum.” which expired at noon yesterday, was extended for one week. This ultimatum was the one issued by Theo Habicht. German leader of- Austrian Nazis, from Munich across the frontier, where the Austrian Nazi "Legion” has its headquarters in exile. A few- of the Nazis in Austria, like nervous troops anticipating a zero hour, did throw stink and smoke bombs and yell “Heil, Hitler” at a few provincial points along the frontier after the expiration of the ultimatum yesterday. Victory seemed to be with the government for the present, for the only recogintion of the Nazi ultimatum —aside from the mobilization had been the statement that it came from “noisy students” and another that there would be no negotiations with the Nazis as a party.

It was j the ’good' men who broke the country. Mr. Filene contended that the country has little to fear from I “radical tendencies,” but rather should guard against the “fixed I American tradition that would not permit us to consider fundamental ! changes when those changes were i actually taking place."
