Contract Bridge
BY W. E. M’KENNEY Secretary American Bridge league THE hand I present today produced qmj.e a discussion among the tour who played it. The man who held the 150 aces said that the hand should be played at no trump, while his partner, with the five spades, claimed that it should be played at spades. Five spades is an easy contract. Three no trump also can be made with a heart opening, which was what the player received However, he had to be especially careful in playing the hand The jump to three no trump over the one spade was a definite slam try. but North did not feel justified In going any higher, West's opening lead was the five of hearts. East put up the king and South, the declarer, won with the ace. South now must cash his ace and queen of spades. Many players might make the mistake of starting the diamond

I suit, but why try to set two suits in dummy when you have no entry for either suit? You might just as well come right out with clubs and lead the ace, king, and a small club. West will be in on the third club with the queen, and could lead a diamond to defeat the contract—but that would be an unnatural play. tt a a NOW. if West makes the mistake of leading a small heart, the declarer has nothing to fear—he can win with the queen, cash his j club, and lead another heart. But if West makes the good play : of leading his jack of hearts, the declarer must discard a diamond from dummy, and refuse to win the | trick, playing the deuce of hearts. If he does not. East will be able to get in with the ten of hearts and will lead a diamond. West must not lead a spade, and j if he leads another heart after winning with the jack, the declarer will makp all the remaining heart tricks and lose only the ten of diamonds. But if West returns a small diamond. East is forced to go in with the queen, which South will win with the ace. South then cashes the eight of j clubs. West and East each discarding a spade. The declarer discards ; the eight of diamonds from dummy. The ten nf diamonds now is played. West must win with the King—otherwise the declarer will overtake with the jack and cash i the two good spades. The queen of clubs opening would have defeated the contract, as East j eventually would have been able to 1 get in to lead a diamond. iCopvricht, 1934. by NEA Service. Inc.)

Wamala prepared a tub and by the time supper was prepared, the stranger reappeared washed and refreshed, retaining the majestic bearing of a queen rather than that of a stranger ill at ease. As Zora seated herself opposite" her guest, she was impressed.

By sign and gesture, Zora sought to converse with her guest, and then La tried it, too, until Zora knew that her guest had been threatened with clubs and knives and driven from her home, and that either a lion or a leopard had attacked her.

La made it clear that she had walked a long way and that she was very tired, and so when supper was over Wamala prepared another cot in the tent of Zora, for something in the faces of the Arabs had made Zora fear for the safety of her guest.

“You must sleep outside the tent door tonignt, Wamala," she said. “Here is an extra pistol.” In his goat skin beyt, Abu Batn, the sheykh, talked with the men of his tribe. “The new one.” he said, “will bring a price such as never has been paid before ...”
