773 TEAMS WILL COMPETE IN STATE BASKET SECTIONALS
Schedules Announced for High School Events Local I. H. S..A. A. Title Play Will Begin in Tech Gym Next Thursday Night: Drawings Also Made for Regionals and Finals Competition. BY DICK MILLER Schedules for Indiana's winter sport spectacle, the twenty-third annual Indiana High School Athletic Association state basketball tournament were announced by A, L. Trester, commissioner, and the members of the I. H. S. A. A board of control today. Bigger and better than ever, was the word given out by the ruling body as they announced 773 teams, a record number, would play in the sixty-four sectional meets next week end Last year 771 teams competed. 767 in 1932 and 766 in 1931. Only two teams Cory and Adams Township, of Burnettsville, failed to get their entries in on time and were ruled from the starting field. The three day tournament plan for sectional centers of sixteen teams, tried out last year by Gary, will be repeated in that center and also used in the Indianapolis sectional, at Technical high school gym.
Under this plan play Opens next Thursday night with three games, and one game is added to the Friday night program, thus enabling elimination of the four Saturday morning games This plan us considered not only a relief on the physical stamina of the competing players but also is regarded a boon to the attendance. While in sixty-three instances the sectional champions will be crowned Saturday night, March 3. the Lafayette champion will be determined at 3 p. m. The high school officials, unwittingly, several weeks ago leased the gym to Purdue university for a basketball game that night. The I. H. S. A. A. board, in a last-minute change, permitted Lafayette, although only fourteen teams participate, to begin play Thursday night with two games. Allow Teams 1 Men In all other centers action begins on Friday and continues through Saturday when the field will be reduced to sixty-four sectional champions. Elimination play is again resumed with regional tournaments in sixteen centers on Saturday, March 10. with four teams assigned to each center. Two games in the afternoon and on** at night further will reduce the teams to sixteen finalists, which will compete in Butler fieldhouse here on Friday and Saturday. March 16 and 17. to determine the 1934 state champion. With each team allowed to cer- j tify twelve players and use ten in J the sectional play a total of 9.276 will prepare this w'eek for the final test. The determining of winners in all these games will rest upon the shoulders of 155 officials for the sectional games, with two in each section and three in the sectionals , where thirteen to sixteen teams | compete. No less than eight teams nor more than sixteen will compete in any sectional Make Drawing in 2 Hours The drawing of the schedules for the sectional, regional and final | games, a gigantic task made more or less easy by the system used by j Trester was accomplished in less than two hours Friday afternoon in the association offices in the Circle Tower. With reduced prices prevailing the board expects the maximum 14.683 seats to be filled at the final games and anew record set. The largest crowd to witness the final games was 13,276 in 1933. 51 Anderson (Eight Teams! Oame ofTiClaU P. M FRIDAY 1 7 30—Frank,on and Elwood <l-2j 2. B:3o— Alexandria and Lapel i2-i> A. m.
