EDWARD ELGAR. NOTED MUSICIAN DIES INWNDON Knighted for Achievements, Composer, 76, Ranked With Greatest. By United Prut LONDON. Feb. 23—Sir Edward Elgar. 76, composer of world renown, died today. Many critics believed him one of the greatest of modern day composers. He had been in virtual retirement for thirteen years, grief-strickdh by his wife's death. Sir Edward died at his Worcester home, Marl Bank, to which he was removed early in January after he seemed recovering from an abdominal operation he underwent in October. Two weeks ago, using two telephone lines from his sick bed, he conducted an orchestra which was making a phonographic record of his composition “March From Caractacus.” Wanted Quiet Funeral . Plans to pay national honor to Sir Edward were halted when his daughter revealed that he had asked that there be absolutely no mourning, no flowers, and that he be buried privately. Praise-sparing George Bernard Shaw once said of Elgar: He is the greatest master of music in the world—master of stupendous tone without noise." Sir Edward called himself a selfmade musician. Sent as a youth into a lawyer’s office to study, he practiced the violin. He said this was his only musical education. Knighted by Edward He was 42 when London musical people were astonished by his "variations,’’ intended to be character studies on intimate friends. Musicians marvelled at his mastery of contrapoint. His best known works were: Pomp and Circumstance marches (the trio of one contained the melody whistled over the world as "the land of hope and glory’’); “The Dream of Gerontius”; “The Apostler,’’ and “The Kingdom,’’ all oratorios; a violin concerto; the first and second symphonies, and “Salut D'Amour.” He was knighted in 1902 when Edward VII ascended the throne. He wrote the official ode lor the coronation. MRS. MASSIE EXPECTS DIVORCE DECREE TODAY Hawaiian Assault Case Principal Foresees Immediate Ruling By l nited Press RENO. Nev., Feb. 23.—The first line in what she described as "a new' page in my life,” were to be written today when Mrs. Thalia Fortescue Massie filed suit for divorce against her young naval lieutenant husband. The principal figure of the sensational Hawaiian assault case expected to charge Lieuteant Thomas H Massie with mental cruelty. The decree probably will be granted today inasmuch as Lieutenant Massie is not contesting the action. DOCTOR ROBBED OF 5114 Terre Haute Man Loses Billfold in Theater Confusion. Dr. R. M. Himelick. Terre Haute, was robbed of a billfold containing sll4 while attending a downtown theater last night, he told police. Dr. Himelick said that he noticed a man acting drunk, lurch toward him as the shows changed and thinks he was robbed during the confusion.
