WTLZER United Press Financial Editor NEW YORK, Feb. 16.—Metal shares led the stock market into higher territory at the opening today with trading fairly active. Gains ranged from fractions to a point. United States Smelting opened at anew high at 133't, up '2, and continued to rise in the early trading. Howe Sound opened at 50, up % on a block of 1,200 shares; Cerro De Fasco 39%, up % on 1,000 shares; Phelps Dodge 18%, up % on 1,000 shares; Anaconda 17%, unchanged on 3.000 shares; Mclntyre Porcupine 41%, up %; Noranda Mines 35 %, up %; Kennecott 22%, unchanged, and American Smelting 50%, unchanged. Automobile issues were fairly active and firm as were amusements. Steel shares were higher with United States Steel at 58%, up %, and Bethlehem 48%, up %. Farm equipments, mail order shares, chemicals, oils and rails made small gains. Douglas Aircraft firmed nearly a point to 24% in a firm aviation group. Wet stocks were unsettled but changes were only fractional. During the early trading volume continued heavy. Quotations were abbreviated and the tape lagged behind the market. Prices firmed from the opening levels, still featured by the silver shares. The latter were inspired by further gains in the price of silver metal. There was nothing in the news to affect the market. The annual report of American Telephone and Telegraph Company showing earnings at $7.37 a share, against $7.82 a share in 1932, was in line with expectations. Traders were of the opinion the Stock Exchange regulation bill would be modified, a factor which induced some short covering and brought in new buying power from small traders. 'TXThe Vo Life Insurance Company Virginia INCORPORATED 1871 :: HOME OFFICE—RICHMOND, VA. Sixty-Third Annual Statement 4 *■ To Our Policyholders and the Public: It is with a sense of gratification that the Sixty-Third Annual Statement of The Life Insurance Company of Virginia is presented. The Company has again added to its record a year of satisfactory progress. The increase in insurance in force for the year was more than $3,000,000.00. In view of economic conditions which prevailed in 193 3 with resultant heavy lapses, we consider even this small increase an outstanding achievement. Our assets were increased by $977,936.64, and there was a gain in surplus of $245,984.13. An addition of $500,000.00 was made to our special contingency reserve fund, which now totals $4,000,000.00. Payments to policyholders and beneficiaries, including policy loan advances, amounted to $10,583,097.38. The Company’s financial policy has been maintained on the same conservative lines as in the past, investments being made with safety of principal the first consideration. Realizing the disturbed state of the public mind in regard to financial institutions, unusually large reserves of cash and government bonds were carried throughout the year to meet any demands that might be made for payments under policy contracts, whether death claims, surrender values, or policy loans. Capital, surplus and special contingency reserves at the end of the year amounted to $14,637,805.33, thus providing a large margin of safety for our policyholders. Bradford H. Walker, President . Total We have examined the account* and financial records of The I.ife Insurance Company of Virginia for the year ended December 31, 1933. Cash on hand was counted and certificates of cash in banks were obtained from depositaries and reconciled; the investments were examined or otherwise accounted for; and the correctness of all the other assets was established to our satisfaction. Bonds are stated at . their amortized value as provided by the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and stocks at their cs [ market value at December 31, 1933. The reserves on policies in force were computed by the Company’s JLtx actuary and the statutory portion thereof was confirmed by the Bureau of Banking and Insurance of YCZ the Commonwealth of Virginia: and we satisfied ourselves that full account was taken of all other liabilities. In our opinion the above statement correctly reflects the financial condition of the Company at December 31, 1933. T. Coi.Z.MAK AsMF.W! & Cos., Richmond, Va., January 25, 1934. WHEAT PRICES DISPLAY FIRM TRADINGRANGE Change in Weather News From Southwest Is Favorable. BY HARMAN W. NICHOLS United Pres* Staff Correspondent CHICAGO. Feb. 16—Firmness in cotton and stocks provided an incentive for wheat buyers and futures opened slightly higher on the Board of Trade today. At the start May wheat sold at 91 cents, up % cent. July and September were cent higher. Corn was dull, however, and ruled unchanged to % cent lower. Oats were unchanged to % cent higher. A marked change in weather conditions over the southwest, some traders feel, would induce a number of longs to liquidate. NEW YO'lK CASH GRAIN R)/ Vnitrd Prctr. NEW YORK.
