FLIERS CLIMBED OVER 13 MILES BEFORECRASH Russian Trio Reached Unprecedented Height, Barograph Shows. By Unit'd Prmi MOSCOW. Feb. 2.—A barograph ribbon, rescued from the wreckage of the gondola from the stratostat Syrtus. in which three valiant Soviet aeronauts plunged to their deaths, showed today that they had reached the unprecedented height of thirteen and two-thirds miles before they crashed. The ribbon, registering pressure within the gondola, was intact and undamaged. It showed that Commander Paul Fedoseenko and his two companions reached their highest altitude at 12:30 p. m. Tuesday. In addition to the barograph ribbon, the investigating commission also recovered the Joint diary’ of the three men. Commander Fedoseenko Ilia Ususkin and Andrew Vasenko, who constructed the balloon. In the opinion of the commission, the accident was caused by the “excessive and progressively increasing speed of descent, which started at 12:45 p. m. and became alarming at 4 p. m ” “At a height of 12.000 meters.” the report said, "this caused a break in part of the ropes supporting the gondola and severed the remainder, whereupon the gondola became detached from the balloon and struck the ground with great force, at 4:23 p. m.” The balloonists were thus approximately seven and one-half miles above earth when their gondola became detached. The reported radio message of ice formation on the gondola was discounted today. The Orden of Lenin was conferred upon them, posthumously, and the Soviet Aviation Society decided to erect a monument to them near the Moscow Air Club. “In China fans are equally used ‘ by both sexes, those for men being larger and having particular forms,” ! says Dr. Berthold Laufer of the Field museum.

Fourth weekly broadcast of Radio Parade, sponsored by members of WFBF studios, will be heard again Friday at 8 p. m. , Sylvan Levin, conducting the Philadelphia Studio orchestra, will continue the exposition of Dvorak's majestic NewWorld Symphony during the short concert to be broadcast over WFBM and the Columbia network Friday from 8 to 8:15 p. m. Initial program of the Legion-Times Golden Gloves boxing tournament Friday, will be broadcast by Steve Wilhelm over W'KBF at 9:15 p. m. Strikes Out Prodigy Can Not Name World Series Winners. By United Pre*s NEW YORK, Feb. 2.—Warren Bachelis, who at 13 is one of the youngest high school graduates in the city’s history, today “flunked” a test that few American boys would tail to pass. “Who, asked a delegation of newspaper interviewers, acting as examiners, “won the world series in 1933?” Warren, who had read the obscure Latin grammarian Ambroses Theodosius Macrobius at the age of 10, hesitated. “I cfon’t know,” he finally confessed. “Well, then,” persisted the examiners, “who’s Bill Terry?” Again there was an embarrassed, negative response. But he brightened when asked what he thought of Macaulay’s life of Dr. Johnson. “I just adored that—and Boswell’s Johnson, too,” he replied. “You know, I admire Macaulay’s style, his periodic sentences, his structures.” Warren plans to enter Columbia university in September to study medicine.
