NOTED AIRMAN EXPLORER DIES IN RETIREMENT Walter Wellman First to Try Trans-Atlantic Trip in Dirigible. By Vnitht prr t NEW YORK. Feb. 1? Walter Wellman. 75. first man to attempt a trans-Atlantic dirigible flight and the Colonel Lindbergh of his decade, is dead. He retired a number of years ago and retirement was so complete that his death was not generally known until today, although he died yesterday. Mr. Wellman first won fame as an Arctic explorer but it was his unsuccessful attempt to cross the Atlantic in the dirigible America in 1910 that gripped the imagination of the nation as widely as when Colonel Lindbergh flew alone from New York to Paris. The America was crude in extreme compared to latter day Zeppelin type dirigibles. It was 228 feet long. Two motors of eighty horse- j power each propelled the ship and one of ten horsepower served as a donkey engine. Mast startling feature of the America was her ; equilibrator which trailed in the water and was designed to keep the ship at an average height of 200 feet.

This device only succeeded in wrecking the airship when she was seventy-two hours at sea. She had traveled north, then doubled back hoping to reach Bermuda, but ended her voyage when she sighted the S. S. Trent 400 miles off Hatteras. She had traveled 1,008 miles. From 1884 to 1911, Mr. Wellman was Washington correspondent for the Chicago Herald and the Chicago Record-Herald. He eventually gave up Journalism to devote all his time to exploration. He was an active intimate friend of President Harding and devoted his last active years to world peace. Mr. Wellman is survived by his wife, one daughter, and two sons. Death was caused by cancer of the liver. DENIES HUNGER REPORT Toothache. Not Lack of Food. Caused Collapse, City Man Says. Court Upholds Ban on Pupils Not Vaccinated

Unvaccinated children legally may be barred by officials from attending schools during a disease epidemic, under a ruling by the Indiana supreme court yesterday. The court upheld right of city school boards and health departments to enforce such a ban, adding that the compulsory school attendance law- does not affect the situation, and that vaccination laws are not in conflict with constitutional rights of parents of school children in the matter of sending them to school.
