GAME OFFICIALS WIDEN SCOPE OF CROW WAR Hunters Urged to Kill Starlings and Other Predatory Birds. St at* conservation officials today auggested to crow hunters, who are participating in a state-wide contest of the department, to shoot homed owls, hawks and starlings also in an effort to bend of all predatory birds. Care should be taken that the birds shot come within the predatory classification, it was pointed out. Mass., for the alleged slaying of 11-year-old Peggy McCarthy last fall, pending arrival of an officer from Somerville and fingerprint verifications from Washington. So closplv does the description of the man being held resemble Cahill that the Massachusetts city despatched a special officer south. He was expected to arrive today or early tomorrow. Police Chief C. L. Chandler sent the man's fingerprints to Washington yesterday.

City Cops Dash Open Road Romance of 3 Ohio High School Girls

THE open road beckoned and tnree high school girls of Canton. 0., harked to the allure of adventure and left home with high hopes of romance. Today in Marion county detention home, the adventurers. Mary Parretta. 18; Vivian Wise. 17, and Yvonne Marang. 17, decla.-ed that Indianapolis is “a hard town to get through." Though it was their first experience as “girls of the open road,’ two of them expressed hopes that they would have more success with the4r next venture. Yvonne, inoculated with the wanderlust from tales of her father's travels, said she had been warned against Indianapolis.

Ind , Jan. 26.—Police of nothem Indiana today continued their hunt for Otto Himmel, 46, itinerant farm hand wanted for the murder of Miss Sarah Murphy, 77, and attack on Mrs. Lydia Maxwell, 89. yesterday. The condition of Mrs. Maxwell, seriously beaten over the head, was reported as "fairly good ' in a hospital at Kendallville. where she rallied sufficiently late yesterday to name Himmel ac her assailant. Mrs Maxwell said Himmel came to their home early yesterday morning, and struck Mrs Murphy on the head several times with a club. She died of a fractured skull. Mrs. Maxwell said that Himmel also hit her with ‘the club. The first blow knocked her down and she escaped death by feigning dead. The intruder took a purse containing $145.

For the past veer, she has helped an older sister care for amost a dozen small brothers and sisters. Her mother has been confined in a hospital. “I don't know’ whether they’re worried about me or not," she

said, wiping her tears away. “It’s a squabbly family. I wanted to finish school—l was on the honor roll for three years, and wanted to go to McKinley high school. But my father doesn't think much of school. He wouldn't let me finish, and I tried to get work and put myself througn. I couldn’t do it, and then I decided that hitchhiking would be fun." “We had good luck getting rides on trucks,” they mused this morning at the detention home, 225 East Michigan street. “The dri-

vers bought our meals for us, and gave us cards of introduction to other truck drivers when they left us, so we could get other rides.” Authorities in Canton have been advised that the girls are detained in Indianapolis. They will be held in the detention home until they are returned to their homes. In the meantime, adventure on the open road has beeen discontinued. The girls were occupied in the prosaic task of piecing patchwork quilts at the home.
