AUTO DEATHS FOR 15 YEARS SET AT 10,500 Accidents Average 71 a Day. Highway Chief Tells Purdue Class. A staggering total of more than 10.500 persons have been killed in automobile accidents on Indiana highways during the last fifteen years, with an average of seventyone accidents a day, James D. Further statistics presented by Mr. Adams revealed that approximately 31.000 persons were injured in 26.000 automobile accidents in the state last year, with a fatality rate of 2.5 per cent over 1932. Mr. Adams advocated widening of shoulders along paved highways, 50 per cent of fatalities outside cf cities and towns resulted from cars leaving the highways and crashing) into side ditches, bridges and culvert walls, he said. The state highway department will begin its program of culvert: widening within the next few weeks and will cover hundreds of miles, he said. Plans for inaugurating a roadL-iue improvement program in Indiaita also were outlined by Mr. Adams This move was made possible. he said, by obtaining wider nghts-of-way.
