Spain’s Men ‘ Are Seldom With Wives •Women Welcomed Strike Which Closed Cases in Madrid. BV GRETTA P%LMER Special Writer VIEW YORK. Jan 25 Those LN Spanish senorltas may seem to be having a pleasant life of it, with castanets and serenading under their balconies ar.d strong silent youths tossing them around the floor in a tango, but listen to this dispatch from Madrid: Wives and mothers appeared to f be the only persons who enjoyed the recent waiters' strike which snapped shut every rafe, bar. night club and restaurant in the Spanish capital. With no plare to go to discuss politics, sports or any other i problem perturbing them, the men either stayed at home or took their, families to the movies. “‘l.believe,’ wrote one wife to the newspapers, ‘and I probably express the opinion of all Madrid women when I say that we are more pleased than ever with our hus- j bands because they spend less and give us more of their time. “ I hope the case owners and waiters never come to an agreement; because as long as the cases remain j closed pur home life will be free from the customary arguments about my husband s going out.” Not Confined to Spain Now, there are ca.-es on record in the archives of marital disputes and discords in America in which a husband has gone out of an evening, leaving his wife at home. There are even rases in which such conduct has become a common and regular occurrence. Sometimes the wife is pleased pink at the chance to get an evening of solitude and to catch up on her darning. Sometimes she raises what is vulgarly known as an awful squawk. If the second and unfortunate situation arises, and the man in the case is indomitable in his derision to go out anyway, what happens in the typical American home? Does your modem wife sit, in a Penelope-like patience, with ner crochet-work and her memories? You do not know her very well if you imagine that such a thought would enter her bright young head. IJefore her husband's coat-tails are well around the corner, she has slammed her newest hat on her head and Is off. Perhaps to the theater, perhaps to visit friends, perhaps to see what devilment is afoot at the Women's College Club, put she is off. * Takes Social Life Separately There are many couples, in New York specially, who habitually take their social life separately. They may, by chance, be invited to the same dinner party and appear together. But quite often the husband will be asked without the wife ©r vice versa, and the other partner is unfeelingly left to shift for lumself In many cases, especially where both husbands and wives have professional friends who would bore their mates to tears, it seems to be a very equable arrangement, indeed. But to sit at home while papa drinks up the week's wash money In the cases and hot spots of the town? —Imagine yourself, as the French say! And probably the good grandee takes a run over to Paris, from tune to time, dropping the little woman a post-card picture of the Eiffel tower. Not for baby! f RECENT BRIDE IS HONORED GUEST Mrs. Fred R. Farnam entertained with a bridge party and personal shower Tuesday night at her home, 3239 College avenue, in honor of Mrs. Edgar Zumpfe. BY W. E. M KINNEY Secretary. American Bridge League WE all like to get aces and kings because, as a general rule, they are sure trick-winners. But occasionally we find a hand where we must throw’ away an ace to make our contract. In today’s hand Mrs. Helene Scranton of New York found it necessary to away not only hei ece of spades, but also her king of spades, to get a coup on the East hand. Before re-bidding the diamonds, North shows a fit in hearts by supporting the heart bid. However, when Mrs. Scranton in the South showed a stopper in clubs by a bid of three no trump, North felt that there was a good play for a slam. a a a WESTS opening lead was the queen of clubs, which Mrs. Scranton trumped in dummy with the three of hearts. She then returned the ten of hearts, East prop-

erly refused to cover and the ten was allowed \o ride through to West's singleton king. West returned the jack of clubs, which was trumped in dummy with the six of hearts. The seven of hearts was played back. Mrs. Scranton finessed the nine, which held. It now looked as though East’s queen of hearts was safe, but Mrs. Scranton next played her queen of diamonds and overtook in the dummy with the ace. She played the king of diamonds, discarding her king of clubs, and now started to play diamonds. If East had trumped in. all Mrs. Scranton would have found it necessary to do was to have overtrumped. picked up the Inst trump, and entered the dummy with the queen of spades. However. East refused to trump, sc Mrs. Scranton simply ran off five straight diamond tricks, discarding all her spades, including the ace and king, and now led a spade from lummy. East, of course, was forced to trump, having nothing but the two hearts left. Mrs. Scranton overtrumped and won the last trick with the high trump, making her contract of six hearts.
