—Let’s Go Hunting— HUNTER GIVES VIEWS ON FOX EXTERMINATION Knightstown Man Objects to Stocking Indiana With Deer. BY LEFTY LEE Times Hunting Editor A letter from a member of the Knightstown Conservation Club, expressing his views on the recent fox hunt sponsored by this club, has ! some logical points telling why the fox should be exterminated. The letter also shows this member to be against the stocking of deer in Indiana. his claim being that the money needed to provide the parent herd should be used to restock the state with rabbit, quail, pheasant and game fish. The letter follows: "Mr. Lee: In one of your recent articles you invited the sportsmen of the state to express their views concerning fox hunts. I am a member of the Knightstown Conservation Club. Personally I would say j that there should be no fox drives, i I believe I have heard some of the i state's highest authorities on conI servation admit at public meetings | that the hawk and the fox are responsible for the loss of more j pheasant, quail and rabbit, than j any other destroyers of game in the state. "If this is the case, why should the state game commission get behind fox drives and o. k. them? If the state is going to spend money to ; stock pheasant, quail and rabbit, why should they protect their worst enemy, just for the pleasure of a few fox hunters? "While I have no official figures for this statement. I believe that there are ten quail and rabbit hunters to say nothing of the coon and possum hunters and the farmers, interested in exterminating the fox because of his habit of destroying game, chickens and pigs, to one ifian interested in protecting the fox. So why should these ten men give up their sport, just to satisfy the one who wants the fox for his own pleasure ? “The state law also states that there is a closed season on possum, coon, fox, sunk, etc., as to killing and trapping. “Now my dog is what is known as a coon and possum hound. I can not run her during the closed | season, because she is not called a fox hound but the fox hunter can I run his dog for ten months out of the twelve and is not called a violator of any game law, simply be- | cause he is not carrying the possum, | skunk or coon, that his dog has killed in the fields and left. “Another thing, these law proof hounds and their out of season trainers are the greatest enemies to conservation of fur bearing game. In fact they be classed lower than the fox for the fox can not cut a coon and her young out-of tree, or shoot a gun. “Many of the men are, I hope, my friends and they violate in the manner I have mentioned, but they can not see it as I do and I only am stating my views and the views of some of my friends, who believe that they are foes to conservation, if conservation means the preservation of game. “I would like to see a law passed that would keep the fox hound in, the same as the coon hound, from Jan. 15 to Nov. 15. “In regard to deer for Indiana, if the money needed for this project would be used to protect the game we now have, it would be far better for every one. As far as the fox drives are concerned, they could hold one every week in this section and there still would be an oversupply.” Other letters expressing your views will be given to the readers interested. The ice fishermen will be on the lakes in the northern part of the j state over the week-end and the I fishing should be worth while. Os ! course some of the big lakes will not jbe safe for ice fishing, but the smaller lakes should be in fine shape. The rabbit hunters will have enjoyed their best day of the season Saturday and we are expecting the reports of limit bags to come trickling in all day. The boys in the mailing room at i The Times are calling Bill Shaw, “hothouse.” The reason for this is that Shaw will never go hunting, because for him it is too cold during the hunting season, and his fishing is confined to July and August for the same reason. Chuck Klein is a great hunter and fisherman, but he has been spoiled, jas far as the sport in Indiana Is j concerned, getting his fill of the two I sports in Florida. Texas and Mexico at the end of each season. Our I guess is that Chuck will pack his tackle with him to the Cubs camp ; at Catalina island this spring.
