PARAGUAY TO , CEASE FIGHT WITH BOLIVIA Hope Seen for Real Peace in South American Conflict. B u Cnited Pm i* I MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay, Dec. 19. —Soldiers of Bolivia and Paraguay -Were to ground arms at midnight •tonight in the Gran Chaco area fter a war which had become more •bitter month by month as It progressed in the South American Jungles. A League of Nations commission,■ sent to negotiate between the two 1 countries, arranged an armistice, to endure until midnight, D-c. 30, ■while the commission and the PanAmerican conferees here try to effect permanent peace through an agreement to arbitrate. Hope by the Pan-American conference that peace would be lasting ‘was so strong that jt was officially 1 announced yesterday the nations j had agreed to put their long-stand-ing dispute over the Gran Chaco area to arbitration before the world : Court at The Hague. Paraguay denied this, but said that it had offered an armistice. Bolivia announced its acceptance late last night. The league commission cabled Its headquarters at ! Geneva that the armistice had been arranged effective at midnight tonight. Bolivia was willing to accept arbitration at once, it was indicated. Its foreign office announced also that it had been agreed by the Bolivin and Paraguayan governments and the league commission thati future negotiations would be conducted here where the Pan-Ameri-can conferees, coincident with the league men, have been trying to arrange peace. ‘ Paraguay was unwilling to accept a complete peace proposal without negotiations because of victories it j Jiad gained in recent days in the Chaco area. The armistice arrangement came qu.cklv after months of futile efforts to end the fighting. During the ? week-end the league commission, I now at La Paz, the bolivian capital, j arranged a peace plan, it was sub- j mitted to the Bolivian government; and approved, it involved arbitration. The offer was telegraphed to Paraguay, which declined but proposed the armistice so that peace could be discussed. SEXTON TO ENTERTAIN AT FAREWELL DINNER Retiring County Treasurers to Fete Friends.
