Federal Agents Sent to Watch Weirton Steel Company Employes’ Election
H<4 initrd Prro WASHINGTON. Doc. 15. Department of Justice agents were sent today to plants of the Weirton Steel Company to observe an employes’ election of representatives for collective bargaining. The company and the NRA apparently moved closer to a showdown in court, involving the validity of the national recovery act. Attorney-General Homer s Cummings dispatched ie agents from Pittsburgh to Weirton plants in Steubenville. O.; Clarksburg. W. Va., and Weirton. W. Va., as the upshot of a heated dispute between Ernest T. Weir, chairman of the steel company board, and Recovery Administrator Hugh S. Johnson.
The dispute centered on the company's refusal to permit representatives of the national labor board to supervise the election. Chairman Robert F. Wagner said the comROBINSON WILL SPEAK Senator to Address Legionnaires on Disablement. Senator Arthur R. Robinson will address members of the Irvington Post. General Johnson wired Mr. Weir that he was informed that “you are about to commit a deliberate violation of federal laws’’ by holding a "company dominated” election. Before Mr. Weir received the telegram. General Johnson talked to him by telephone, after which Mr. Weir issued a statement saying, “we both agreed that it was a matter for the courts to decide.” Mr. Cummings refused to speculate on legal proceedings. for fines up to S3OO a day for violators. General Johnson planned to call an open hearing, he warned Mr. Weir, “to determine whether your blue eagle should be withdrawn and whether you should henceforth be denied the privileges of the steel code.” The Weirton Arm is the largest subsidiary of the National Steel Company, and its labor troubles have dragged for months. It employs 17.000 men. On Oct. 16 a three-way agreement between the company, its strikers and the national labor board was concluded. It provided for calling off the strike, return to work of strikers without discrimination and for an election under auspices of the board of workers'
representatives for collective bargaining. it provided further that any dispute arising from the agreement would be submitted to the labor board for decision. Senator i Wagner charges the company has repudiated the agreement. CITY~ WOMAN SLUGGED Assailant Flees Without Loot, Victim Reports.
