T nitet Prrtn Washington, Dec. 12.— Almost from one end of the nation to the other. education of America’s twenty-eight million school children had suffered severely from the depression. Information at the office of George F. Zook, commissioner of education, indicates that some of the greatest difficulties have been in the deep south, where many counties are reported without normal school facilities. More normal are the far west, the states around the great lakes and New England. Mr. Zook's information indicated that virtually all of the C 75.000 school children in Alabama, for instance, have been affected by shortened terms, and that conditions might be made even more difficult next year. 97 Per Cent of Schools Open In this connection, however, Dr. Dale S. Young, of the Alabama Education Department, said that around 97 per cent of the schools are open, a majority having foreseen the situation and opened late. He said it is unlikely there will be general difficulties of more serious nature before late in February. It was pointed out here that relief might come from the civil works administration, but red tape specifies that the CWA can hire none of its sls a week workers, except from the relief rolls. Teachers in Alabama and elsewhere have been too proud to affix their names to charity lists, it was said. Connecticut Conditions Normal Official information concerning other statees follow: Arizona—Most school terms shortened one month: teachers’ salaries reduced 20 to 40 per cent. Colorado—Many school terms shortened qne month or more; salaries reduced 5 to 20 per cent. Connecticut, Delaware and District of Columbia—Conditions almost normal. Florida—Some schools closed two three months; some will not open on time next year and many will have even shorter terms. Illinois —Some school terms shortened one month; Chicago teachers still getting only a small portion of their salaries. Indiana Not Hard Hit Indiana —Only a few districts shortened their terms; number of teachers will be 18 per cent below normal next year. lowa—Some schools closing early. Kansas —Nearly 1.000 schools closed altogether; others have shortened terms; more than 4,000 teachers jobless. Kentucky and Louisiana—Many school terms shortened; salaries reduced 10 to 40 per cent. Maryland—Schools normal except for teachers’ salary reductions. Massachusetts and Michigan— Many school terms shortened. Minnesota Conditions nearly normal. New York Normal Missouri Terms shortened for score' of first class high schools and about two hundred rural schools; pay lowered 25 per cent. Nebraska, New Hampshire. New Mexico, Ne' York—Schools operating as usual. North Carolina and Oklahoma— Most school terms shortened to eight months. Oregon—Some schools closed be- , cause of exhausted funds; salaries reduced 15 to 20 per cent. Pennsylvania and Rhode Island— Schools nearly normal. South Carolina—Official information unavailable. South Dakotoa, Tennessee and Texas—Many schools closed early; 10.000 teachers jobless. Utah—More than half of schools closed one month early; teachers have lost money through uncollectable warrants. Vermont, Virginia and Washington—Schools curtailed only slightly. Wisconsin —Schools operating as usual, but 6.000 teachers jobless. Wyoming—Some school terms shortened to seven months.
