Chicago Will Stay in Big Ten, President Declares
P.V GEORGE KIRKSEY United Press Start Correspondent* CHICAGO. Dec. B.—The Big Ten conference opened its annual winter meeting today at a loop hotel with schedule-making and rules interpretation apparently the most important matters on the three-day program. The meeting will end Sunday when the basketball coaches and officials meet to interpret the cage rules. A harmonious meeting was forecast by Major John L. Griffith, commissioner of athletics, who said most of the business transacted would be routine. Reports cf a possible opening for another school to join the Big Ten if the proposed merger between Northwestern and Chicago is consummated were denied by officials of both schools. Hutchins Denies Rumor In answer to these reports, Robert M. Hutchins, Chicago president, said last night at the Maroons’ football banquet: "Nothing is further from our intentions. Chicago has no intention of ever abandoning athletics.’’ At least one Western Conference official, however, insists that it Northwestern and Chicago merge, one or the other will have to give up its conference berth. With at least two Big Ten schools, Ohio State and Indiana, considering a change in foot-all coaches, some developments may transpire in that field during the week-end. W’illaman Vnder Fire Sam Willaman, Ohio State coach, whose team lost only one game last fall, has been under fire since the Michigan defeat, and it was reported in some quarters that he might announce his resignation in Chicago. A Columbus sports writer and former Ohio State assistant coach has been William's most persistent critic all year. Most of the Big Ton schools have their 1934 football schedules complete, except for one or two nonConference games. Schedules, however. will be drawn up for baseball, track, tennis, golf, swimming and
