SHAKEUP 'JUST AROUND CORNER' FOR RAILROADS Government Goes Into Action to Put Business on Its Feet. IS)/ f 'nitr/J Press WASHINGTON. Dec. 7—The government intends to take up the case of the train caller who says "umphffff" when he means Ashtabula. If he doesn't Improve his pronunciation the federal co-ordinator of transportation indicates he may be "umphfled'’ out of his Job. The unintelligible tram announcer is only one of the worries of co-ordi-nator Joseph B. Eastman, whose job is to rehabilitate the nation's $26,000,000,000 railroad system. His major Job is to get more people to ride trains. He therefore is considering such major railroad reforms as: Windows for upper berths; time tables which ordinary citizens can rend; hot water faucets which pour out hot water in passenger car washrooms; abolition of tips for George, the porter; prettier decorations for the interior of the cars; recreation cars for bridge, movies and dancing; bgger car windows; rubber cushioned wheels; home delivery of railroad tickets, and telephone service from trains while they are in motion. “I Need Your Help* “I need your help in this job,’ - said Eastman, in sending a letter today to 200,000 Americans, asking them for suggestions for betterment of railway service. With the letter he sent a questionnaire asking twenty-four pages of questions, recalling all the trials and tribulations of railroad travel, from cinders in eyes to the lack of smoking rooms for women in railway coaches. The questions were mailed to college students, traveling salesmen, business executives and others who do considerable traveling. He asked the motorists when last they rode on a train. He asked the others whether they'd like seats comfortable enough to sleep in during the day, whether they'd ride in fancy, streamlined trains if they were provided, and how fast they’d like to go, if such trains were put in service. Super Trains Are Near Mr. Eastman's office revealed, incidentally, that the super-super trains of aluminum with tear drop streamlining and motors capable of 100-mile an hour speeds are fast approaching reality. "All the major railroads in the nation," said one of his assistants, "are perfecting these super trains, which are designed to revolutionize the riding habits of the nation. "Little has been heard about these ultra-modern trains because the railroad companies are unlike any other American industry. Most other lines of business brag about what they are going to do before they do it. The railroads work first and do their talking afterward.’ MARRIAGES INCREASE: NRA IS GIVEN CREDIT Philadelphia License Bureau Is Ahead of Last Y'ear. By Vnited Bri ts PHILADELPHIA. Dec. 7.
