'USE GAS TAX FOR HIGHWAYS.' SAYS GOVERNOR County Bond Retirement Is Secondary, McNutt Points Out. “Counties which have their share of the state gasoline tax to retire bonds can not expect to have the federal government finance their county road mamteance program a* a public works relief project.” Thi* ruling was emphasized by Governor Paul V McNutt today when he directed attention to the turning down of such proposals by the Governor's unemployment relief committee, which must approve all projects which takes persons from poor relief and puts them on the federal pay roll. The committee worked throughout Sunday at the state house so that new programs could be launched today. Before the end of the week approval wall be given projects employing 61,622 men, the Governor said. When the basket relief roll has been exhausted, others who are employed will be given jobs, it was pointed out. A meeting has been called for Wednesday morning to discuss plans for raring for unemployed women workers. Thus far, all jobs have gone to men. The women to be employed will Include school teachers, stenographers and other unemployed in clerical as well as labor groups, Governor McNutt explained. Another new' ruling made today includes the inspection of each project already approved bv a representative from the state relief committe. SALES TAX HAS SAVED SCHOOLS, AVERS M'NUTT Administration Pledge Has Been Fulfilled, He Points Out. High praise for “the action of the 1933 general assembly" inadopting the state gross income tax was voiced todav by Governor Paul V. McNutt. He termed it the ‘one act which has saved our schools.” The Governor pointed out that the state administration had pledged both the July and October collections of this tax to the schools and predicted that it would mean at least S2OO a teaching unit. “More than $4 800,000 now' is ready for distribution by the income-tax department," Governor McNutt said. "Figures on the number of teaching units are being compiled by the state department of education. "The total will depend upon the liberal ruling made in regard to one-room and part-time teacher schools. It is estimated that the total will be from 19,000 to 20.000. In either case, the S2OO pleged of my administration will have been kept. “Should the low figure be used, it will mean $215.20 per teacher and the highest. $204 46."
