STEAM TRAIN DAYS DOOMED, SAYSJFFICIAL Gas, Electric Locomotives Will Replace Old Smoke Belchers. By United Prrta CHIf'AGO. Not. 9.—The days of the steam lorrtotive with its belching smokestack and hissing cylinders. definitely are numbered, in the opinion of Fred Sargent, president of the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad. Single unit ras and electric locomotives of various designs gradually will supplant the iron horse in both suburban and long haul service, Sargent believes. The single unit system is more practical, flexible and economical than either steam, or a comprehensive, centrifugal electrified system. “Elaborate studies made by Westinghouse and General Electric show that it would cost at least $60,000,000 to electrify the three suburban branches of the Northwestern with a fixed power plant system,” said Sargent. "I predict that within eight or ten years, possibly sooner, the gas unit, or oil-electric engine will be so far developed that it will take the place of steam on American railways.” WOMAN IS INJURED BY YOUTH’S FOOTBALL Mrs. Katherine Barber Is Hurt by “Out of Bounds” Play.” The “backyard” football league claimed its first innocent victim yesterday when Mrs. Katherine Barber, 51, of 3019 Ruckle street, was struck in the chest by a football kicked by Edward Miller, 19, of 3021 Ruckle street, in his own yard. Police, who investigated, reported Mrs. Barber was not injured seriously. STATE PASTOR IS DEAD Lafayette Reformed Church Minister Dies After Operation. By United Prcaa LAFAYETTE. Two Broken Fingers Are a Handicap to Shan-Kar Hindu Dancer Suffered So Much Pain From Injuries That He Gave Only Two Dances Here Last Night. By WALTER D. HICKMAN T TDAY SHAN-KAR, Hindu dancer, today is at the Michael Reese U hospital in Chicago for x-ray examination of two broken fingers on his right hand which he sustained in Cleveland Friday night. Mr Shan-Kar with his right hand in a sling gave two dances only last night at Caleb Mills hall on the opening attraction of the Civic Music Association. The dancer violated Instructions of his physician by appearing in Cincinnati Tuesday night and last night in Indianapolis.
“I am sorry. 1 ’ he said, “but you know accidents—they can happen to anybody any time. I hope the next time I come back to your city I will be able to dance with both hands.” Howard E. Potter, manager of the tour, stated that Mr. Shan-Kar was in so much pain and mental distress it was necessary to order him to leave Indianapolis at midnight for Chicago. Tour to Continue Mr. Potter stated that the company without Mr. Shan-Kar would appear at Indiana university at Bloomington tonight and in Milwaukee Friday night. “The tour was supposed to extend until March 15,” Mr. Potter told me, "but it is impossible to say when Mr. Shan-Kar will be able to return to the company.” In spite of the suffering ShanKar and his determination that the show must go on, the program was not satisfactory. To my way of thinking, everything depends upon the star. The other members of the company are interesting and so is the orchestra, but the majority of the numbers are only mildly interesting when Mr. Shan-Kar is absent. It was necessary to eliminate the most important numbers of a program which has been a sensation all over this country when ShanKar was in the best of form. Only two numbers last night actually caught the spirit of the program. One was the ‘Dance of the Hunter,” by Debendra, a brother of Shan-Kar. Here was savage and wild rhythm and indicated many of the joys of the program if the star had been present to work out ail the patterns of motion in his program. Beautiful Pantomime The other number was “Snanum,” by Miss Simkie and Kanak-Lata. Here was exquisite pantomime cf the dance. Miss Simkie's “Spring Dance” was an exotic creation. These dancers use the muscles in their necks as much as our dancers do in their limbs. My personal opinion is that it

The picture shows Miss Harding in a high position of scientific achievement and responsibility. She then yields to utterly feminine instincts and searches for romance. It shows her making a noble sacrifice and proving the grandeur and nobility of her sex. The short subject program during the week consists of a Clark and McCullough comedy, “Fits in a Fiddle”; a Betty Boop cartoon, “Morning, Noon and Night,” and a Paramount news reel.

WATER LEVELS DROP;RESORTS TO TAKESTEPS Property Values Suffer as Lakes of Wisconsin Shrink Away. By United Preta SUPERIOR, Wis., Nov. 9.—Wisconsin will not be entitled to the name of Land of Lakes within fifty or seventy-five years because of the rapid shrinkage of lake water levels, according to experts. Property owners and resort operators have begun to take interest in the problem. Thousands of dollars’ worth of damage has been caused through water shrinkage. Reforestation and the building of dams is seen as the ultimate - swer. The tendency of upper state lakes to shrink away was revealed in a report recently completed by John S. Bordner, Douglas county, who showed that twenty-two of* thirtysix lakes in Douglas county gradually are decreasing in size. As an example, Whitefish lake’, in southern Douglas county, has receded fourteen feet since 1891. The lake dropped 2'j inches this September. In Washburn county, Whitefish

lake, one of the most beautiful in a state which has thousands, has dropped four feet since 1927. This year it shrank ten inches. Thousands of bass died Then spawning beds were exposed, and the shore line in spots became ugly. Resort owners are considering f leral aid in tire construction of a dam to prevent further water loss. Lakes long since dried up are found in any number throughout the state, showing that it is not impossible for them to disappear. Lack of snow of any depth for four years and diminishing rainfall have hastened the shrinkage, observers say. ARCHEOLOGIST WILL LECTURE AT CHURCH Butler Professor Will Tell of Research in Palestine. CODE MAY RULE LIQUOR TRADE Distillers to File AAA and NRA Agreements With U. S. By United Preia WASHINGTON. Nov. 9. —Continued warfare against the illi-it liquor traffic was decreed by federal agencies today as it was indicated the NRA and AAA codes might be utilized to control the legalized liquor industry when prohibition ends Dec. 5. Distillers have filed a marketing agreement with the Agricultural Adjustment Administration and a code of fair practice with the NRA. It was pointed out that vintners and brewers might be brought under similar codes to give the government complete regulatory power. Indications that this form of control would be exercised over the newly-legalized liquor industry were contained in the creation of a beverage section in the processing and marketing division of the farm administration, and the summoning of

The AAA codes not only could require the use of American-grown products in the manufacture of liquor, wines and beer—to aid the farmers—but could regulate marketing practices.
