RAZOR-WIELDING NEGRO PAIR ROB 3 TAXI DRIVERS Two Other Attempts Are Foiled: Mayor’s ‘Nephew’ Is Arrested. Temporarily, at least. ".smalltime holdup men in the city ar> picking on taxi cab drivers, instead of filling station attendants, who previously had been regarded as easy prey. According to police reports, two razor-wielding Negroes practically cornered the market last night, and early this morning, with three jobs cf taxi banditry, in all of which the same methods were followed. Two other taxi drivers were slated to be the victims of operators who were more polished in their procedure. but prompt calls for police resulted in a turning of the tables. Mayor Reginald H. Sullivan found a long lost "nephew early this morning when the alleged relative told a taxi driver that the mayor would stand good for a So check, drawn in payment of a taxi fare. Thedore Ballard, 28, of 639 North Davidson street, a taxi driver, told police he picked up a fare at Meridian and Michigan streets, and received orders to drive to the Y. M. C. A , where the passenger alighted after instructing Ballard to wait. Another man approached the cab and asked if the passenger was a man named "Sullivan.” The newcomer decided to wait for the reappearance of Mr Sullivan. Gives Cheek for $5 When he appeared, he told Ballard he was Mayor Sullivan’s nephew, and gave instructions to drive to Butler university. At Twenty-second street, the “nephew ’■ proved himself no relation to the mayor, by changing his mind. On the way back, the car was stopped at Twelfth street and Sullivan presented a $5 check on a Champaign '111.) bank in payment of a $1.45 bill. "If you have any trouble getting it cashed, the mayor will take care of it," Sullivan is said to have told Ballard. Ballard thought differently, and called police, who arrested Sullivan, claiming to be from Winston-Salem. N. C., for drunkenness, resisting an officer and vagrancy, and Russell Coffey, 2221 Ashland avenue, for drunkenness and vagrancy. Arraigned before Municipal Judge Dewey E. Myers this morning. "Sullivan" said his name was Millard Jones. Gary, Ind. The case was continued until Saturday. Held on Drunk Charge Ben Kiefer, 24, of 314 East Walnut street, a cab driver, was flagged byChester Noblett. 35. of 3165 North Illinois street, at Michigan street and Miley avenue, he told police. After riding around for sopie time, during which the meter ticked up a $4 bill. Noblett found himself unaable io nay. Kiefer took him bacit to Michigan street and Miley avenue, and put him out of the cab. According to Kiefer, Noblett engaged in a brief altercation with a Negro. When police arrived. Noblett was taken to city hospital for treatment of a cut lip, and then arrested on charge of drunkenness. The two Negroes, who are believed by police to have figured in three taxi driver holdups, included in their victims. Frank Gardner, 33. of 1316 Bellefontaine strept. Apt 3. Robert Goodlet, 28. of N -th Belmont avenue, and R'oeri ,*a>y, 39, of 813 East St. Clair street. CANADA TO KILL SURPLUS BISON OF PARK HERDS Buffalo Meat to Be Again Available for Table Fare in U. S. p.y Science Service OTTAWA. Nov. 9.—Buffalo meat will be available once more for homes, hotels and restaurants of this continent during November and December, following the decision of the Canadian department of the interior to reduce the government's buffalo herds at Buffalo national park near Wainwright, Alberta, by 2.000 hpad. This wholesale slaughter recalLs the settlement of the western plains when hunters and settlers wiped out nearly all the buffalo of the plains, killing more than a million of the shaggy animals in less than twenty years. This year's buffalo slaughter is necessary because of the increase of the herd at Wainwright to 7.500 head. There is only grazing room for about 5.000 animals at this preserve, where twenty-five years ego the Canadian government brought a herd of 716 animals. It is estimated that this original small herd has grown to 23.000 animals, including those moved to other preserves and those which have died naturally or been killed off lor meat by the government. Not all the buffalo meat will be eaten fresh. A number of the animals will be used to supply food to destitute Eskimos and Indians in Canada's far north. The meat is dried and shipped to the northern police posts, where the constables will distribute it to families in want.
