CITY IS FACING 'HUGE SHORTAGE OF GOOD HOMES Demand for Better Type of of Housing Forecast by Cantwell. "One of these days we are going to wake up and find there Is a real demand in Indianapolis for new homes of the better type," J. Frank Cantwell, home complete exposition director, said, at a meeting of the Indianapolis Home Builders* Association last nieht. Mr. Cantwell, who last week attended a housing conference at Chir cago, said it was reported at the meeting that at least 20 per cent of the houses now inhabited in the United States are insanitary and unfit for human habitation. Reports indicated, he added, that the United States faces a tremendous house shortage brought abr ut by families having "doubled up," and obsolete property being razed. Investigation revealed, he said, that 200 old buildings here have been razed because the property was not modern enough to rent or because owners felt taxes were too high on the property in relation to rentals. Declaring many homes here are Vacant because the owners can not borrow funds to make necessary improvements. William L. Bridges, of Bridges & Graves, advocated that the government be urged to make loans direct to home owners instead of through building and loan assort t ions and the federal home loan bank.

WHATEVER economists and statesmen may think of England's future, some of London's ! bright young writers seem to have despaired of it completely. They w'rite books in which one i glimpses England as a society j decadent, played-out, deserving of I damnation; and one gathers that I they will be disappointed if the ' is postponed beyond next j Tuesday at half after three. A fair sample of this sort of ! thing is "Many Happy Returns,” by I Richard Strachy; a novel which is j flip, cheery and profoundly de- j pressing. It opens by describing an Eng- j lish birthday party in war time. ! We meet three children of upper middle-class families—two boys and a girl, vivid and likable youngsters, expecting the best of the world and deserving well of it. Then the scene shifts to today, I and we find that our likable chil- j tiren have gone straight to perdition. The boy is living with a lad who uses perfume and does interior j decorating. The other boy is trying fruitlessly to become a scholar and is involving himself in a liaison with a chambermaid. And the girl has got so bored by the monotonous life of her circle that she has taken to streetv. a Iking, just for the thrill. Nice, jes? But this Isn't just a decadent story about vicious young people. It seems to mirror a society which has gone hopelessly adrift and can , think of nothing better to do with r nice youngsters than to waste them \ as these have been wasted. The war killed a generation, and j it killed a century of beliefs along j with it—leaving, one gathers, noth- I inp but the blackness of darkness forever. This book—which, by the way. I j don't think you'll like—is published bv Harcourt, Brace <fc Cos. for $2.50. Do False Teeth Rock, Slide or Slip! The secret of keeping young is to j feel young—to do this you must watch your liver and bowels—there's no need of having a sallow com- j plexion—dark rings under your eyes, —pimples—a bilious look in your face—dull eyes with no sparkle. Your doctor will tell you ninety per cent of all sickness comes from inactive bowels and liver. Dr. Edwards, a well-known physician in Ohio, perfected a vegetable compound as a substitute for calomel to act on the liver and bowels. which he gave to his patients j for years. lr. Edwards Oliv* Tablets are gentle ! in their aetion yet always effective. They help bring about that natural j buoyancy which all should enjoy by j toning up the liver and clearing the system of Impurities. l>r. Edwards Olive Tablets are known by their olive color. 15c, 30c, 60c.—Advertisement. Beware the Gough or Gold That Hangs On Persistent coughs and colds lead to serious trouble.
