STORM TROOPS STILL BAFFLED BY COMMUNISTS Vast Underground Party i Continues to Work With Stealth. By United Press LONDON. Oct. 20.—Although each day produces news of the arrest of scores, sometimes hundreds, of Com-, munists scattered throughout Nazi ! Germany, the Communist party’s j vast underground organization con- j tinues its activity in defiance of the; new rulers. Tens of thousands are in prisons j and concentration camps; numerous Reds have been sentenced to death and killed; others have been slain under circumstances which never may come to light ,or sought escape in suicide. Yet substitutes move up from the revolutionary ranks with astonishing rapidity. Ruthless enforcement of the law, the terror and a certain amount of treachery within their own ranks have crippled the Communists’ illegal organization. But for years and particularly in the months preceding the Nazi die- j tatorship, the Communist party expected to be outlawed at any moment. Prepared for Illegality Asa result, its leaders had painstakingly organized the subterreanean Communist government to start functioning as soon as the government crushed the party’s legal apparatus. The collapse and virtual disappearance of the Social-Democratic party and its affiliated trade unions after Hitler came into power, leaves no doubt that the same fate would have befallen the Communists had they, like the moderate Socialists and trade unions, neglected to prepare for illegality. Asa consequence, however, leadership of the decimated Marxian labor movement in Germany appears to have passed from social democracy to communism. Claim Big Membership The Communists themselves claim that, of their 250,000 pre-Hitler members, nearly 100,000 still are paying membership dues to the illegal party. Even if this estimate be exagger- j ated, it is known that in numerous | German industrial districts as much j as half their membership has re- j mained intact, despite Nazi vigil-1 ance. Os eighty-five members of the i central executive committee of the • Communist party, three—Walter I Schuetz, Franz Stenzer and Alfred j Nohl—have been murdered and | about twenty-five sent to prisons, j or concentration camps. So intense is the vigilance of the j secret police, however, that escape | from its requires unheard of caution and ingenuity on the part of the | hunted Communists. Much of their propaganda is | smuggled into the country from j abroad by carts, automobiles or j boats. One group of their agents, sta- j tioned at the Czechoslovakiani border, has been hollowing out treetrunks, packing them with antiNazi leaflets and floating the inno-cent-looking logs down the river to accomplices on the German side of the frontier. However, the Communists are still typing, mimeographing or printing the bulk of their propaganda within Germany.

Nudist Film Makes No Bid to the Passions Beautiful and Dignified Movie Reflects Daily Life of Certain Groups of People Here and Abroad. BY WALTER D. HICKMAN STRAIGHT from the shoulder, I am giving you my verdict of “This Nude World ’ now on view at the Ohio theater. This movie is not sensational. It is not dirt. It should not arouse in any normal person a sex desire, but it should convince one that exercise and play has its place in the every day life of every man, woman and child in the wold. The shots of the nudists in American nudist camps as well as those in Germany and France have been photographed with the idea that people in the theater wear clothes and that board of censors are still operating.
I have reviewed in this paper months ago several nudist books, especially "On Going Naked” by Miss Jan Gay. She was authentic, honest and sincere in her book. She is the same in the way she records visits to nudist camps in this country, France and Germany in this movie. There Is nothing cheap or sensational to “This Nude World.’’ The eye of the camera has been so trained that few people could be offended however straight laced. That is my opinion. I did not go to see “This Nude World” with the -view of getting an eye full. I went there to see if the eye of the movie camera actually recorded the results of such training. Does this method improve the bodies and minds of those who sincerely follow the practice? There are no paid actors or trained actors in this picture—that is the scenes of the actual camps, is merely a travelogue showing the beauties of farm or colony life whether you wear clothes or not.
Alcatraz Island Shown in Current Times Reel
Striking Views Pictured by Universal: Other Events Recorded. Striking views of Alcatraz Island, California, where the department of justice plans to establish a penal colony similar to the famous Devils Island, are to be seen in the current issues of The Times-Universal Newsreel. Graham McNamee, noted radio announcer, describes these and the other events in the reel. The island, a veritable fortress, according to present plans, will house America's most desperate criminals. Other important news events reported in The Times reel, include unusual views of a giant sea elephant arriving at its new home in Philadelphia; exciting scenes as Juan Carlos Zabala, Olympic champion, wins a marathon run at the world's fair; appalling views of the havoc wrought by an earthquake at Matsuda, Japan; exclusive pictures of the world’s largest winery preparing to meet the demand for wine after the repeal of the eighteenth amendment; exclusive pictures of title wrestling match between Jim Browning and Rudy Dusek in New York; unusual close-ups of a white man in Sydney, Australia, who was adopted by Chinese when a boy and now resides with orientals and speaks their language, and views in Oklahoma City as Machine Gun Kelly and his wife were sentenced to life imprisonment for their part in the abduction of Charles F. Urschel.
It is not theater. It is really a news recording of such colonies in three different countries. There is a lesson to “This Nude World.” That lesson is there should be play in the daily routine of every man, woman and child in every country. Play is health. The film shows that health play must be under the proper supervision. That is my idea of “This Nude World” now on view at the Ohio. a u n Sally Rand, who made money for herself and her backers in Chicago and New York, is the headline offering on the new bill opening today at the Indiana. The Lyric re-opened yesterday with good crowds seeing “Love, Honor and Oh, Baby.” Other theaters today offer: Jean Harlow and Lee Tracy in “Bombshell” at the Palace; “I’m No Angel” at the Circle; “Emperor Jones” at the Apollo; “Girl in 419” at Keith’s, and, burlesque at the Mutual and Colonial.

Safe from Offensive Body Odor Safe from telltale M. S., too! * (MEDICINE SMELL) 'MM Cause of Body Odor—Stale Perspiration Curds— Now Quickly Removed by Deep-Pore Cleansing
ARE YOU disturbed by the fear of Body Odor —yet reluctant to bathe with a soap that leaves an offensive medicine-smell? Happily you no longer need bathe with strong-smelling soaps, whose after-odor is as offensive as the condition it is supposed to prevent. Here’s why: Research chemists have now discovered that the cause of body odor is stale perspiration —calcium, salt and particles of fat lodged deep in the pores. The thick and sticky lather of most ordinary toilet soaps is unsuited chemically to mix with this waste material and set it free. Instead, it hardens into clogging curds. That’s why deep-pore cleansing is needed to remove the objectionable curds.. . and chemists of the largestsoap makers in America have now developed a quick and odorless way to end body odor instantly —with Kirk’s Coco Castile Soap. Kirk’s Coco Castile, being a 100%
naping case, although there have! been no new developments which have produced clews as to the iden- i tity of the kidnapers, Joseph B. I Keenan, anti-kidnaping drive head, said today. Mr. Keenan, special assistant to Attorney-General Homer Cummings, said that study of the crime still was going on through regular channels of the department. “Os course,” Mr. Keenan said, “we never have closed the Lindbergh case. It always has been considered open by us and we have examined new clews as they developed. I know of no new developments.” The front of the British Museum \ at London recently was cleaned for the first time since it was built about a century ago.

to figures compiled today In the office of George C. Cole, superintendent of public instruction. Never in the history of Hoosier schools has such a teaching load been carried at so small cost, it was pointed out. Huge savings also were reported in the cost of transporting pupils in the rural districts, the report shows. In the 1930-31 school year there were 675,352 pupils enrolled. This increased to 697.470 in 1932-33. In 1931 there were 24,497 teachers employed and in 1933 only 22.829. In 1931 the number of pupils per teacher was 32.5 in grades 1 to 8, while in 1933 there were 35 5. In the high schools there were 17.7 pupils per teacher in 1931 and 20.9 in 1933.
