SAFETY ADDED IN OPERATIONS BY NEWDEVICE Measures Load on Heart During Operations for Surgeons. BV Bcirnri Service CHICAGO, Oct. 13—A new yardstick of safety for the operating room was described at the Congress of Anesthetists here by a British anesthetist and physician. Dr. W. Stanley Sykes, Leeds, England. With this yardstick, called the energy index, surgeons and anesthetists can determine with mathematical precision the risk of operating on*any patient. The exact load under which the patient’s heart is working can be checked as accurately as an engineer can check on the load of a dynamo in a power plant. The test gives in millimeters of mercury the mathematical load under which the patient's heart is laboring. The index is determined by adding the systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings and multiplying the sum by the pulse rate. As the heart's load increases or decreases from the normal of 14,400 millimeters per minute, the risk the patient runs in being operated on becomes greater. Other Uses Found If the reading is higher than normal, it is because the heart has enlarged to take care of a greatly increased load of work If the reading is lower than normal it is because the heart has given out entirely under the load and the energy it can expend has decreased. The operating room is not the only place where anesthetics are being used today. They are being used to relieve the intolerable pain of certain diseases, such as cancer, and as a result the entire aspect of cancer wards in the hospitals is changing. One of the biggest developments in the rehabilitation of industry’s cripples will be through the use of anesthetics, in the opinion of Dr. F. H. McMechan, Rocky River, 0., : secretary of the congress. Aids Accident Victims An untold number of industrial j cripples in the country are the re- i suit of accidents which involved nerve injuries, or in which the nerves have become so painful that the patients can not work. Dr. M. B. Greene and associates, Drs. William W. Hala and Julius Kaufman of Brooklyn, said that i such a patient’s condition can be | diagnosed by intensive X-ray ] studies which show just where to J inject alcohol so as to relieve the conditions. These injections, they reported, stop the pain, restore flexibility of the muscles and some patients even return to work. SALES OF GAMES, TOYS SHOWING BIG INCREASE Milwaukee Merchants Report Gain; Adults at Play. P’l United Preee MILWAUKEE. Oct. 13.—An increase in the sale of games and toys j for both adults and children has j been reported this fall by Milwaukee merchants. More adults started playing games during the depression than ever before and with the new NRA leisure sales are expected to hold up and even increase, one merchant said. Grownups and children have been stealing each other’s games. I another dealer reported. “Children, many only eight or nine years old, are playing bridge now," he said, “and their parents are deserting the card table for games of skill or luck which have been developed recently." ISLANDS FLOAT IN LAKE Prefer to Live Their Own Lives; Break Away and Move. By United Press WHITINGHAM. Vt., Oct. 13.—Sadawaga lake now has two picturesque floating islands. Resemebling a huge ship with trees as high as thirty feet for> masts, a large island has shifted its position considerably in the lake over a period of years. Now, as result of a recent heavy storm a three-acre section has broken off the main island and gone floating by itself.
