A Devils Island as secure as nature and men can create awaits the federal government's "vicious and irredeemable" criminals. It is Alcatraz Island", a grim little rock in the middle of San Francisco bay, capped by a military prison for 600 deserters and other t army delinquents. Attorney-General Homer Cummings last night told the national anti-crime conference that the war department had agreed to turn it over to the juctice department for holding habitual jail-breakers and depraved criminals now in federal jails and penitentiaries. Opposite Golden Gate As soon as a warden and an assistant warden can be appointed, the present inmates of Alcatraz will be moved to other military prisons and the bad men of the civil jails will be moved in. Most of the latter will come from McNeils Island. Leavenworth and Atlanta. A work program will be developed at Alcatraz and its personnel put under civil service. Alcatraz is a tiny up-jutting rock more than one mile from land on any side. It stands directly opposite the Golden Gate and only government hoatji stop there. At night the roving eye of a lighthouse sweeps the waters in a great circle. No man ever has been known to escape. He found fifty-feet of faulty rail and flagged down a passenger train before it reached the damaged tracks. Western Union Chief Has Fond Memories of City

Roy B. White Spent His Boyhood Here, He Bares on Visit. Memories of younger days in In- ' dianapolis were recalled yesterday by Roy B. White, president of West- | ern Union, who is here for a short business visit! “Having resided in Indianapolis off and on since childhood, I naturally consider it home,” Mr. White ‘ said. “Although my visit here at I this time is to be very short, I seem to have spent a large part of it meeting old triends.” Mr. White was president of the Central Railroad ot New Jersey un- j til he became president of West- j ern Union last June. Mr. White gained his first ex- j perience as a telegraph opeartor in j 1900, when he was located at the I office "somewhere over on Belmont avenue.” The next ten years he spent here and in Cincinnati as dispatcher and later chief dispatcher on the Cincinnati, Hamilton & Dayton rail- , road. Before that Mr. White said he j used to carry papers for the old Indianapolis Sun, before it had a j folding machine, "when we news- j boys were given the paper in strips ; and had to sit on the sidewalk and j fold them before we could sell i them.” Mr. White was enthusiastic in his praise of the "outstanding progressiveness of Indianapolis and its un- | usual growth as an inland city.” | “Its reputation as an industrial j and manufacturing center need no omment,” he said.
