BY DAVID DIETZ Rrripps-Howarri Science Editor Almost overhead, a little to the west and in the hazy track of the Milky Way, the Northern Cross shines brightly this month. Not so famous as the Southern Cross, it is composed nevertheless of some of the finest jewels of the northern heavens. Since a view of the Southern Cross requires a trip to the tropics, let us get acquainted with the one which can be seen from our own back yards. You should have no difficulty in finding the Northern Cross. Suppose you begin by locating the Big Dipper. This month it is very far to the north, almost on the northern horizon if you are doing your stargazing between the hours of 8 and 9:30. The two end stars of the dipper, the pointers, point back up into the sky to the North Star, which, as followers of these monthly star guides know, is the end of the handle of the Little Dipper Now still higher in the sky, and about as far above the North Star as the Big Dipper was below it, you will find five bright stars making a sort of letter “W,” a “W” that has been pulled slightly out of shape. This is the constellation of Castellation of Cassiopeia and it lies in the Milky Way. You will not see the Milky Way if there are too bright ground lights around you or if the moon is bright. Next follow the track of the Milky Way as it passes overhead. In it just a little west of the overhead point you will find the Northern Cross. i by a brilliant first magnitude star, I Deneb. Three bright stars are contained in the upright of the cross, Deneb at the tip. Sadr, at the point where the transverse crosses j the upright, and Albireo, at the j bottom. It is interesting to compare these three stars. Deneb, a first-magni-I tude star, is the brightest of the I three and a beautiful white in color. Sodr is a second-magnitude star. Albireo, less bright than Sadr, is a third-magnitude star and topaz yellow in color. Two other third-magnitude stars mark the transverse arm of the i cross. The one at the left end is known as Gienah. No name for the other has come down from the ancients and astronomers call it Delta since it is the fourth brightest star of the constellation. Beautiful, dazzling white Venus, twin sister planet of the earth, continues to be the brighest object in the night sky. But it is now low in the west and sets very early in the evening. Mars is to the west of Venus, therefore, still lower in the sky and it sets even earlier. On Oct. 14, Mars and Venus will be in conjunction, that is, very close together. A distance of only 1 degree and 15 minutes will separate them. On

Oct. 22, Mars and the moon will be in conjunction, a distance of 4 degrees and 1 minute separating them. Saturn is the only planet visible in the late evening sky. It is to be found in the southwest sky and is easily identified by its bright, but solemn yellow color. Jupiter is no longer visible in the evening sky. It is in the morning sky, but too close to the sun for observation this month.
