PROBE EFFORT TO KIDNAP BABY IN BEECH GROVE Police Investigate Actions of Man Who Tried to Enter Home. What is believed to have been an attempt to kidnap a 16-months-old baby placed in a home by the St. Elizabeth orphanage at Beech Grove was reported to police last night. Mrs. Mary J. Thompson, 718 East Seventeenth street, told police that she had the baby cared for at the home of Mrs. Rose Turner, 3008 Wood street, while she worked. Yesterday a man about 40. driving a large black automobile, came to the home and inquired: “Is there a baby here?’’ Mrs. Turner replied that there was, and the man, she said, demanded to see the child and tried to force his way into the house. The door was slammed in his face and he left. Taking the child, Mrs. Turner w’ent to the Thompson home. When she came back, the man accompanied by a woman, was seated in the car in front of the house. He said nothing to Mrs. Turner, but drove back and forth several times. U. S. OFFICIALS’ ACTS SCORED BY LAWYERS Bar Group Deplores Steps heading Away from Constitution. A plea that the United States Constitution and the rights of individuals guaranteed therein be preserved, was sounded by speakers at the annual guest dinner of the Indianapolis Bar Association in the Columbia Club last night. Noel C. Neal, Noblesville, former appellate court justice, and William A. Hough, Greenfield, former tax board member, deplored acts of public officials during the last few r months, which they declared are “leading us away from the Constitution." Attorneys and judges were urged to co-operate by Mr. Hough “because they can be of great help to insure national recovery," and “because we must keep the Constitution intact.” Attorneys from the seven counties adjoining Marion county were guests.
