—Dietz on Science — ENERGY UNITS ARE EXPLAINED IN GLOSSARY Molecule, Atom, Isotope, Prime Elements Described. BY DAVID DIETZ Srrlppi-Howard Selrnre Editor A number of readers, perusing recent accounts from Pasadena of the experiments to turn energy rays into particles of matter, have complained to me that they are confused by the multiplicity of names lor the various particles of matter. At one time or another I have explained in detail the meaning of these terms. But. perhaps, a brief glossary of them would be appreciated at this time. So here goes: Molecule: The smallest particle of a substance which can exist and retain the characteristics of that substance. Thus, we speak of a molecule of water, or of salt, or of sugar, and so on. Atom: The particles out of which molecules are constructed. A molecule of water, for example, consists of an atom of oxygen combined with two atoms of hydrogen. There are as many different atoms as there are chemical elements, namely, ninety-two. Isotope: Formerly, it was believed that all the atoms of any given chemical element were exactly alike in structure and weight. Now it is known that while all the atoms of any given chemical element are alike in chemical behavior, they may differ in structure and weight. These are known as isotopes. Atom Is Divided Thus, when we speak of the Isotopes of chlorine, we mean the various atoms of chlorine which differ from each other in weight and structure. We now come to the structure of the atom itself. We must keep in mind that the atom divides itself into two parts. First there is the nucleus, sometimes called the inner core or the heart of the atom. It is a compact structure and accounts for practically the entire weight of the atom. Next there are a number of particles associated with the nucleus. These, according to the Bohr theory, are revolving about the nucleus in circular or elliptical orbits. Electron—One of the constituent particles of the atom. The particles revolving around the nucleus are all electrons. Free electrons are also encountered under various circumstances. The so-called electric current is a stream of electrons in motion. Electrons are also believed to exist within the nuclei of atoms. The electron always exhibits a negative electric charge. . Neutron Is Newcomer Proton—This is a positively charged particle with a charge equal in intensity to that of the electron. It is, however, a considerably heavier particle than the electron, having a mass about 1.850 times as great as that of the electron. The simplest known atom is the lighter isotope of hydrogen. It has a nucleus consisting of one proton. Revolving in some sort of orbit around it is one electron. The nuclei of heavier atoms contain both protons and electrons. Neutron —This is one of the newcomers in the field. It is a particle exhibiting no electric charge. It is believed to be a close combination of a proton and an electron, the positive charge of the one neutralizing the negative charge of the other. Helium Atom Described Deuton—This name has been coined within recent months for the nucleus of the heavier hydrogen isotope. The nucleus of the lighter isotope, it will be remembered, consists of one proton. The neucleus of the heavier isotope consists of two protons and one electron. Since a neutron consists of a proton and an electron, it may be said that a deuton consists of a proton and a neutron. Alpha Particle—This is the name given to the nucleus of the helium atom. It consists of four protons and two electrons. It will be seen that this is the equivalent of two deutons. Radium, disintegrating spontaneously, gives off three kinds of rays, alpho, beta, and gamma. The alpho rays consist of alpha particles: the beta rays, of electrons; and the gamma rays, of energy. STATE-WIDE $1.50 TAX AGITATION IS CLAIMED City Leader for Unit Declares Meeting May Be Held As Protest. Agitation for a state-wide meeting to be held in Indianapolis to protest tax rates above $1.50 is growing in several counties, according to Gavin L. Payne, local realtor and a leader in tax reduction movemems. Information regarding the meeting plan was received by Mr. Payne in a conference Wednesday with George M. Fries of Connersville, president of the Hoosier Taxpayers Union. Inc., during which Mr. Fries told of receiving numerous letters advocating the plan. Appeals to the state tax board, which will be followed by mandate proceedings, are being planned in several counties, Mr. Payne said. Local realtors also have announced a program of resorting to courts if the state board does not enforce the $1.50 law.

MANY CALLS. Apartment Rented Calls, calls, calls and more calls. That was the experience Mr. J. E. Horsley, of 631 N. New Jersey Street had with his apartment ad in The Times. Os course the apartment was rented quickly and at very little cost. Every day more and more people are turning to Times Want Ads because they produce results at the lowest Want Ad rates in the city. If you have a vacancy it is easy to see that the cost of advertising your place in The f • Times will be only a small percentage of the income it will earn, if rented. Phone Rental Ads to Riley 5551
