YORK ASSAILS BEER LAW AS 'GRAFTING' ACT Anti-Saloon Chief Flays State Officials for Control Measure. "The state beer control law has provided a setup for the greatest demonstration of legalized graft in our history." L. E York, superintendent of the Indiana Anti-Saloon league, charged Thursday night at Richmond at the 113th annual conference of the Indiana Yearly Meeting of Friends. Earlier Thursday the meeting had gone on record through reports of its trustees and temperance committee. deploring the rising tide of state votes for repeal of the eighteenth amendment. Attacking the beer.control bill, ork asserted that the Governor, through the excise director, may resort to political appointments in selecting twenty-one brewers, ten importers, 161 wholesalers and more than 3.600 retailers in "administering one of the most liberal liquor laws ever enacted.” ork denied that return of beer had reduced taxes, unemployment and drunkenness.

by wm. e. mkenney American Bridge league (RELIEVE the following hand to be one of the most unusual hands that I have ever seen arise in a duplicate game. It undoubtedly was due to the fact that new cards were used, which often produces freak distribution. The Bidding South was the dealer and passed. West opened the contracting with one heart. North doubled, and East bid three hearts. South bid three spades, and West went to four hearts. North bid four spades. East went to five hearts, South passed, and West bid six hearts, which North doubled. You might assume that the natural opening from the North hand would be the king of spades the suit his partner had bid. However, North felt that there was little or no chance of getting a spade trick and decided to lead a club He led the king of clubs, dummy covered with the ace and South trumped with the deuce of hearts. South now felt that his partner held four spades and the declarer none, therefore he decided to lead a diamond, which his partner trumped with the three of hearts. a a a NORTH had the club suit counted and knew that there was no further use of leading a club because even if his partner could ruff, West could over-ruff. Therefore, he decided that his only chance for another trick was to lead a small spade, due to the fact that his partner had bid spades. He led the four, declarer played the three from dummy and South played the five as all of his cards were equal, and the declarer followed with the deuce. Another diamond was played, and North trumped with the four of hearts—and thus we find North and South took the first four tricks

Sept. 22.—Missouri river apple growers are doing their part to keep the doctor away by producing about 100.000.000 apples, an amount equivalent to an apple for every man, woman and child in America. According to George T. Groh, president of the growers’ organization, 1.000,000 bushels of apples is the 1933 crop and shipments of 2.000 cars to market will be made this season. Reduction of freight rates and the wide use of trucks in taking apples to market have helped the growers and this year’s crop is considered of a better color and size than the average.
