SOUTH MERIDIAN CLUB SPONSORS GIGANTIC RALLY 100.000 See Parade Marking Elevation of Belt Railroad. A gigantic parade and celebration, sponsored by the South Meridian Street Civic Club to hail the elevation of the Belt railroad tracks at Meridian street alid Bluff road and the repairing of South Meridian street, was held Wednesday night. It was estimated that 100,000 persons gathered along the line of march and in the grounds of school No. 22, Meridian and Kansas streets ■where the speaking program was held. * The parade moved along Pleasant • Run boulevard to Meridian street between downpours of rain. Spectators ran for shelter, but returned a few minutes later when the rain abated. Later another shower interrupted the parade, but did not dampen the ardor of the celebrants. Dance Called Off The speajcing program was halted by showers and a street dance, scheduled as part of the evenings gayety, was called off. Mayor Reginald H. Sullivan and L. Ert Slack, former mayor, lauded the activities of South Side Civic clubs in promoting improvements in the community. Seventy-five decorated floats took part in the parade, which covered a route of five miles and was itself more than one mile and a half long. Bands, orchestras and drum and bugle corps furnished music for the marchers. Wins Float Prise First prize for the best decorated float went to the Phoenix coffee entry, sponsored by Schnull Cos.; second to the Oakley Motor Sales Company, and third to the Polar Ice and Fuel Company. The Indianapolis Sahara Grotto band won first prize among the musical organizations, and Plainfield boys school was second. Oakley Motor Sales Company won first prize for the best decorated home along the line of march. Mrs. Martha Everding. 1025 South Meridian street, won a prize for longest resident, having lived on South Meridian street for the greater part of seventy-four years. ACCOUNTANTS TO MEET Washington Man to Speak on N'RA at Session Monday. Dr. Charles Reidell of Washington will address members of the National Association of Cost Accountants at the Washington, Monday night. Dr. Reidell is expected to touch on the national industrial recovery act in his address. His subject will be “Cost Accounting. Principles and Methods.” The author of a number of bocks on accounting. PAGEANT TO BE CHURCH EVENT Southport Congregation to Mark Centennial in 4-Day Program. Four-day observance of the centennial of the Southport Presbyterian church will open Thursday, Sept 21, with a “neighbors’ night” program to begin at 7. A centennial pageant, “America's Unfinished Battles,” will be a feature of the Friday program. The centennial banquet will be held Saturday night in connection with an organ recital by Lora Hendricks Stewart. Visiting ministers will speak. Sunday will be the feature day of the observance, starting at 9:30 with a consecration service. Baptism of infants, reception for new members and a reunion communion will follow. A home-coming dinner will be served at noon, and a cake with 100 candles will be cut, the person with the longest membership record to receive the first piece. A reminiscence meeting will be held at 2 p m. At 3 there will be an historical and memorial service. A centennial concert at 7:30 will close the observance. The Southport church is among those founded when adherents of the Presbyterian faith forged north from Kentucky, following a longer migration from Long island. However, with either a spade or a diamond open, the strip or end play must be employed. If the queen of diamonds is opened by West, it is won in dummy with the ace. A heart is ruffed by the declarer. Then the king of diamonds is played and a small diamond ruffed. The jack of hearts Is played from dummy and trumped by the declarer, who then leads a trump, winning in dummy w T ith the king. The queen of hearts is played and trumped by the declarer with the queen of spades. A small trump is led and won In dummy with the jack. The next play is the king of dubs from dummy, followed by a small club. East shows out and the declarer should now play his seven of clubs. PLANE IS FORCED DOWN] Scientists En Route to St. Louis Are Delayed Near Rochester, Ind. By United Press ROCHESTER. Ind , Sept. 14.—A damaged connecting rod late on Wednesday forced down an airplane carrying government scientists to St. Louis to help combat the sleeping sickness epidemic. The plane was brought down on a field near Bruce lake, fourteen miles west of here. The passengers were driven to Logansport. where they boarded a train for St. Louis.
