—Let’s Go Fishing— NOV. 1 DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES IN BASS CONTEST Bring That Prize Catch to The Times and You May Win Medal. By I.EFTV LEE Tlmn Fithint Editor When Howard Meyer, president of United Sportsman of Indiana, Inc., closed his Interesting talk over WKBF Friday night he told angleres to learn what to do about their prize catches by reading the Let's Go Fishing column of The Times. In former years, the makers of baits and fishing tackle, co-operat-ing with local sporting goods houses, offered prizes for the largest fish taken on pole and line in the state. After waiting until th"* season was well advanced for announcement of a contest of this kind this year, Walter Jones of the George J Mayer Cos. decided that the sportsman who had the good fortun° to land a whopper bass was entitled to a reward, despite the fact that no contests were annonuced. He approached The Times with this idea and an offer to provide winning medals if this column would sponsor a contest that would reward the anglers in the large and smallmouth bass divisions. His offer was accepted when it was found that no strings of any king were attached. It was arranged that the angler could enter his catch by bringing it to The Times office to be registered, weighed and entered officially. The contest then was announced and the medals made up. The final decision was to have three prizes in each division. gold, sliver and bronze. The medals, placed on display in the window of the Em-Rose Sporting Goods Company, Will remain there until thev are presented to the successful contestants, Nov. 1, when the contest closes. Bring Entry to The Times Some fine bass have been taken since the start, but the fishermen making them seemed to take it for granted that the telling of the catch would make the entry. That mistake has been made in past eontests. but it shall not be repeated in this one. You do not have to be a Times subscriber to enter, and no other red tape is connected with your chance to be a winner. Just catch that big bass, bring him in to Inc Times and your emry is in. Walter Jones donated the medals. First prize takes the gold, second the silver and third the bronze awards. The contest gives the same awards in both the large and small-mouthed bass entries. Our eagle eye who watches the boys at Lake Wawasee reports that Alva Galloway and Mort McClintock are not going over so big with the blue gill, at this lake, but are having oodles oi fun taking their limit of bass. While "Pop" Brown and "Dago" Fenzau, tried and true anglers, are having a heck of a time trying to land some of the big ones. Mill Creek Promising Walt Roeder has been at Barbee lake all week, and he must be catching his limit or working hard trying to do so. as we have not had that line from him that he promised, beiore starting tor this famous lake. When the fall season approaches the angler who knows his Indiana streams, begins to think about a trip to Owen park on Milll creek. This park is located fifty miles southwest of Indianapolis, just off of State Road 43. The creek in this park is about 150 feet wide and reaches a depth of twenty leet, with a shore line of about two and oneha if miles.. Fuming is free. Cottages and boats can be obtained from E. B. Shortridge, who keeps the park open all winter. Held Back by Heat When the frost arrives, the big ones that live in this stream seem to take anew lease on life, and the angler who braves the elements is rewarded with both large and smallmouth bass, large crappie and some huge catfish. Dutch" Hollingsworth started things again at Westlake when he hooked and landed a three and one-half-pound large-mouth bass last week. The two Vehling brothers. Carl and Art, have declared a truce during me hot weather, out are expected to resume their contest for the family supremacy as soon as the weather decides that fall is here. ECONOMICS TO BE TOPIC Public Forum Series Will Open Tonight at Y. W. C. A. Results of the Wellesley summer institute for social progress will be discussed by Martin M. Clinton tonight at the Y. M. C. A. Clinton, director of youth activities for the Indiana branch of the League of Nations Association, will open the public forum series of the League for Industrial Democracy at 7:30 in the social rooms. His subject, "Economics: Liberal and Radical," will reflect sentiments as voiced by the 130 Wellesley delegates representing various trades and professions, from eighteen states. The meeting, open to the public, will be preceded by a membership dinner. 1.400 UNITS Enrollment in City Near Maximum. City Chief Estimates. Although the total figure for the R. O. T. C. enrollment for the cityhigh schools has not been compiled. Captain Lee V. Harris, head of the cadet units for Indianapolis, estimated today that the total number will be paproximately 1.400 cadets, the maximum allowed for the city. Through economies effected last year In repairing uniforms, it was possible for the local R. O. T. C. department to purchase long trousers to replace the traditional leggings for the cadets this fall.
