Fair Midway Has No Sally Rand, but Has ‘Nudists’ Old-Fashioned Ferns Wheel and Merry-Go-Round Attracts Youngsters as Well as Their Elders. BY WALTER D. HICKMAN SALLY RAND ard her fan are both among the missing on the midway of the J. C. Weer shows at the Indiana State Fair. But the midway is very much up-to-date because one show flaunts this amazing banner. "The Nudist Colony.” It caters to the ‘‘highly intelligent’ and as my pass spoke the language that was understandable, I went in to see this amazing exhibit. I noticed a number of people looking through peep holes and so I modestly edged up to one Suddenly I saw my own face peering at me. Then I looked again and found my face, by mirror reflection, was on the semi-naked shoulders and body of a pointed figure on a cardboard. Well, it was not a man’s i bod. , . .

Evenbody howled. And was my face red! The only thing that soothed my injured feelings was when a paid customer asked an attendant when the show was going to start. And looking at those who were gazing at their own faces, the at- j tendant said, ' That's the show.” One show that is giving thrills,' although the idea is not new, is ! “The Coney Island Thriller,” a motorcycle bowl with two riders, a man and a young girl. The sides of the bowl are nearly perpendicular and things get rather exciting when two motorcycles get going at the same time. Weer. the owner of the shows, is rather proud of the fact that he has three large ferris wheels one right after another. And all three are doing business. And the merry-go- j round. It is just like a circus. It is a park institution and will live and attract attention of all people i as long as we have holidays. The Weer midway has about sixteen rides and attractions of a carnival nature. There is the oldfashioned pit-show* with the fat woman, the fire-eater and the two special ‘ attractions'’ at both ends of

the tent. And if you care to see live snakes, there is a large collection of them on view with a hostess who tells you all about their good and bad points. And she never referred to them as her pets. To go to the state fair and not make the midway is a good deal like going to the circus and not buying peanuts for the elephants. I had a good time. I admit it. And I love to hear the barkers ‘‘bark.” Notice the one at the Wild West Show. u a * HERE IS A FINE ACTRESS ‘‘Song of Songs” is something new In pictures. That is, it is an attempt at something new. It is a trial at putting abstract, poetical ideas and ideals into a motion picture. As an attempt it is noble As a success, it isn’t complete. Marlene Dietrich, whom the picture stars, is quite the perfect one

ifor the part. She | .does more than any of the rest, to make the picture i poem. Her very mode of expression, her graceful charm and type of classical beauty, make her well suited for her rharacterization. The story is a simple tale of a young peasant girl who goes to live with her aunt in Berlin. The aunt has a book shop

and here the young and innocent Lily, as she is known, works. Into the book shop conies a handsome sculptor i played very acceptably by Brian Aherne), who sees in the girl the idea for a great piece of work. He asks her to come to his studio and pose, and she accepts. The girl is jilted by the sculptor, whom she has grown to love, and she marries his scheming friend and customer, the Baron Merzbach (played in grand, villainous manner by Lionel Atwill. For several years she lives In hope of forgetting; only to return again with her sculptor-lover, who has never ceased loving her, but had only thought he was not good enough for her, to the studio and to the statute The directing of Rouben Mamoulin is exceptional. The grace, the rhythm and the beauty of the way In which the scenes have been handled give the picture the touch of poetry which I believe was the purpose of the director. The cast is strong and the scenery and photography are good. But be your own judge.
