GIANTS DEFEND N. L. LEAD IN BRAVES SERIES
“Boston Frails by Six Tilts: Bncs Threaten N. Y. Noses Out Cards and Reds Bow to Beantowners in Wednesday Tilts: Pirates Only One and Half Games Out of Second Place. Both club approached the series with winning streaks, the Giants having won t< nos thr ir last thirteen starts, and the Braves twelve of their last fourteen If th< split the series—each winning three, the Giants will .stiil be six games ahead of the Braves, but the third-place Pirates may have gained on the leading pair. The Giants and Braves maintained their difference of six games Wednsd;:-. when bJh club- won out in the ninth inning, New York Shading St I.nu. sto 4 and Boston nosing out Cincinnati, 3to 2.
Fast Oval Predicted A fast track and record limp are 1 in prospect for the stars of the harness racin'? world when they line up for potion at the Indiana lair oval starting Saturday. There will be six days of racing during the Hoosier fair, with the largest and one of the classiest fields ever signed here for competition. Two feature events of the entire program are the Governor's 2:15 pace and the L S. Ayres trot, both scheduled for next Thursday and boasting brilliant Acids of Grand Circuit stars. One of file favorites in the Governor's event is Colonal Tom, the big gelding which stepped to a record of 2:00 3-5 in the Illinois state fair raring last week, defeating a Held of big lin stars. Colonel Tom will get a real test in Thursday's race here, however. Abbie Scott a sure starter, has re.ced better than 2:03 and is improving. Hal Abbe has won on the big wheel in fast time and Miss Abbedale, another starter, ran two beats in better than 2:03 last week. PI KYIS IN At I lON Jackie Purvis, local welterweight boxer, managed by Kelse McClure, will take on Honeyboy Brown of Louisville in a ten-rounder at Quincy, 111., tonight.

The Giants won when Lefty O'Doul singled in the ninth with the bases loaded, scoring Joe Moore with the winning run. O'Doul and Manager Bill Terry drove out homers during a four-run spurt in the j fourth that tied the count. Hal Schumacher and Dizzy Dean both j were hit hard, but went the dis- j tance. Boston downed Cincinnati when Rabbit Maranville’s ninth-inning single scored Pinkey Whitney with the winning tally, after the Braves collected eleven hits off Si Johnson while Hurk Betts held the Reds to Ave. Baxter Jordan led the Braves' attack with three hits in four tries. The rallying Pittsburgh Pirates replaced Chicago at third position j by registering their Afth straight! victory, a 5 to 1 win over the Phillies. while the Cubs split a doubleheader with Brooklyn. Big Ralph Birkofer let the Phils down with four hits, while the Pirates collected thirteen off Ragland, Elliott and Liska. including Tommy Thevenow's perfect day at bat with four hits. This left the Pirates one and a half games behind Boston. Chicago beat Brooklyn, 2 to 1, in j the opener, but lost, 7 to 3, in the j second contest. The Cubs made their two runs in the second inning to win the Arst game, when Bill Jurges' single drove in Mosolf and Hendrick, giving Charley Root a mound victory over Hal Thurston. ;In the second game. Brooklyn j bunched some of its thirteen hits off Bush and Henshaw for three runs in the second and four in the seventh innings. Heimach and Ryan held the Cubs to seven hits. No American Leagues games were scheduled.
