etz on Science — UNIVERSE ‘CUT’ IN 8 SECTIONS BY SCIENTISTS Division Is Made to Aid in Special Survey of Structure. BY DAVID DIETZ Scnppx-Haward Sc tea e* Editor The Harvard observatory has parceled the universe into 'eight major section” for the sake of the survey upon which it has emoarked. Thirty astronomers, employing ten photographic telescopes, are taking part in this survey of the universe, which represents an extension of the work which the observatory has erne during the last ten years. Dr. Harlow' Shapley, director of the observatory, lists the eight major sections as follows: 1. The solar neighborhood. 2. The region of the brighter stars. 3. The local system. 4. The Milky Way. 5. The system of globular clusters 6. The clouds of Magellan. 7. The super-gaxaies. 8 The metagalaxy. Special Lquipmrnt l'*rd The term metagalaxy” has come into astronomical literature only recently. I am under the impression that the word was coined by Dr. Shapley. He uses it as an all-inclu-sive term to describe all of the universe which lies within range of the largest telescopes. Special methods and equipment are being used in each of the eight divisions of the survey. Section I—The survey of ihe ' solar neighborhood” represents an attempt to get well acquainted as possible with our nearest neighbors in space. Dr. Shapley proposes to begin with a census of this portion of space. Majority Invisible It is by no means the easiest part of the work, since mast of the nearest stars are by no means the brightest. In fact, most of the nearest stars are invisible to the unaided eye. • A large, majority of the stars within fifty light-years of the sun are of less than solar luminosity, and most of th"m are below nakedeye visibility,” Dr. Shapley says. “Thus a recent compilation of those stars known to be nearer than sixteen light-years shows but 40 per cent brighter than the sixth magnitude "The exploration of the solar neighborhood is therefore a search for dwarf stars among telescopic objets. Census Is Important "It is important to have as complete a census as passible of the solar neighborhood—the most useful sample we have of a volume of space. A thoroughly observed frequency distribution of stellar luminosities and a knowledge of the dcnsity-in-space laws for the stars within fifty light-years of the sun are fundamental in the analysis of stellar development and the structure of stellar systems.” A light-year, the distance traveled by a beam of light in one year, it will be r"membered. Is 6.000,000.000.000 miles. NAB 2 IN SACK THEFT Attrmpi *to Sell Stolen Goods Brings Arrest of Man and Bov. Attempt of a man and a 15-year-old boy to sell to Louis Sagalowsky, operator of a bottle and sack business at 605 South Capitol avenue, burlap sacks which had been stolen from his warehouse Saturday., resulted in their arrest Monday afternoon. Chester Kimble. 23. Mars Hill, was charged with vagrancy and the boy was placed in the county detention home. Sagalowsky was positive in his declaration that the sacks were part of the 15,000 stolen from his firm. DELAY MASSACRE TRIAL Government Seeks More Time for Evidence Against Staeci.
