40 Enter Trot Race ‘Dark Horse’ Threats Head Hambletonian Field for Aug. 16. Jv Tim't tprrirtt GOSHEN. N. Y., Aut? B—The Kentucky I>rby of the trotters, the *50.000 Hambletonian Stake, has clouded the sky with favored "dark horses " When this race comes of! here Atjk 16, the bovs who do the bettintf can shut their eyes, take their pick and stand as good a chance as the next one of winning. Usually the earlier stakes give horsemen and fans a fair idea of what's what as far as the Hambletnftian victor is concerned. Certain advance races are considered foolproof barometers But not this year. King Ben Backed King Ben. William H. Cane's likely colt, won the first heat of the Matron stake at Cleveland In 2.04 3-5 and was set up a.; favorite until he threw a shoe in the second heat, fell sick, and dropped out of the running But he c-me back In the American stake No. 1 at Salem Spencer McElwyn. who won the Matron stake at Cleveland after King Ben met with misfortune, was a 2 to 1 winter book favorite for the Hambletonian and. although not up to standard after North Randall, he still has his following Mary Reynolds, with victories in the Championship Stallion stake a* Cleveland, and the Peninsular Farms event at Toledo, was classed as the outstanding 3-year-old of the country and a sure-fire winner at Goshen. But that wr.s before Brown Berry waltzed a m ay with honors in the American stake at Rockingham. Brown Berry Surprises Brown Berry, owned by the Lytle Brothers of Plainfield, N J . so casually triumphed over Mary Reynolds that the colt has stamped himself of championship caliber. Walter 'Long Shot > Cox has a horse in the Hambletonian that carries a threat in each hoof. He is Atlantic-Volo, owned by I. O. Blake of New York. Trained carefully all winter and spring, this horse, not considered to have a chance early in the year, won the 3-year-old Castleton trot at Salem so handily that he forced himself into the limelight. Other colts and fillies which have hern performing well to date and who should not bo far behind the leader at Goshen, are: Hollywood Portia, to bo driven by his millionaire owner. John L. Dodge of ington. Kv ; Sir Raleigh, owned by Allan J. Wilson or Boston, and a winter book favorite at 2-1 with Spencer McElwyn; Calumet Donald. owned and driven by Will F. Cat on. the driver who piloted The Marchioness home victor in the Hambletonian last year, and Dick Reynolds. Altogether there nre forty fleetfooted eligibles to the big trot. This represents six more than a year ago. With no dearth of favorites, 12 to 15 starters are expected at Goshen, the largest field ever to get the starting gun in the Hambletonian. BY W. E. M’KENNEY MfrUr American Krldg. leacnr 'T'ODAY I am going to give you X one of the hands that helped Louis H Watson and his partner. Samuel Pry, win the all-American contract pair championship recently held at Hanover. N. H. These boys also were on the team which won the all-American contract team-of-four championship Winning two championships at a tournament is indeed quite a feat, and one would expect a complicated hand from one of these champions However, Watson stated that It is not such a hand that wins for you. but rather being on the job with the u c ua! hands. And so he gave me the following hand. It was bid badly and by carefully watching the play Watson was able to defeat the contract. The bidding, as it actually occurred. was as follows: South bid one spade. West bid two hearts. North passed, and Watson in the East, bid three hearts South bid three spades. West passsed, and North went to four spades. Watson doubled, and South quickly ;e----doubled. The declarer got a favorable opening from West—the eight of clubs. Watson won the trick with the jack and returned a small spade, hoping to step some heart rufTs. Declarer won the trick with the ace and then saw that the only way he could make his contract was to establish the club suit. Therefore, he returned the seven of clubs which Watson won with the queen. Watson decided to return another spade. However—he had to be careful which spade was led, because if he

had played the three, the declarer would allow it to ride to dummy's eight. He would lead another club, trump in his own hand, pick up the outstanding trump and go over to the dummy with the ace of diamonds. discarding his lasing diamond and a losing heart on the two good clubs. In this manner he would make his contract. By returning the nine of spades Mr. Watson shut out this possibility. The declarer was forced to win the trick and must now lose two hearts and a diamond—and so we find that while the return of a small spade would allow the declarer to make his contract doubled and redoubled, the return of the nine of spades defeated this contract two tricks.
