—Dietz on Science — NOISE METERS ARE BUILT TO GAUGE SOUNDS Device Records Intensity From Soft Purr to Loud Roar. DV DWII) DIETZ Rf ripp%-Horn ard *rienc# l.ditnr An airplane engine and propeller make ihe loudest noise ordinarily encontered, according to tne researches of Dr E. E Free of New York. He finds that they make more noise than a boiler factory, a pneumatic riveter, thunder, or a roaring lion The faintest noise ordinarily encountered is that of the beating of a person s heart. Dr. Free and his associates have constructed a noise thermometer." Noises are listed on the basis of a unit of physical intensity known as the decibel. Zero on the thermorn'Mer is the limit of audibility of the average human car. The faintest distinguishable sound is rated at one denb'd. A heart beat, because it is ten to fifteen times as loud, is rated at ten to fifteen decibels. The airplane engine and propeller gets a rating of from 110 to 125 decibels. The maximum for a boiler factory is 115, while a pneumatic riveter and thunder each reach only 110. latudest Noise Unrecorded The roaring lion, they find, can t get up to the maximum for thunder. but succeeds in equaling a great deal of thunder. He manages, however, to make as much noise as Niagara Falls. The roar of the lion and the falls are each rated at ninety-five decibels. Unfortunately, the loudest noise that occurred in the history of civilization wasn't measured. This, according to Dr. Free, was the sound of the explosion that blew up the Krakatoa volcano. Records show that this noise was heard 3.000 miles away. On the basis, he calculates that it must have amounted to 180 or 190 decibels. (Tothain Street Tested Dr Free and his associates have been making studies of street noises, using vacuum tube apparatus of various kinds to measure the intensities of the sounds scientifically. They find that the average motor truck, electric street car. and horsedrawn vehicle, all make the same amount of racket on the street, averaging eighty decibels each. New York's noisiest stre°t was found to have an average noise level of eighty-one decibels. Th? average city street fluctuates from fifty to eighty, while the average factory is worse, ranging from fifty to ninety decibels. The average city office is better, having an average from forty to seventy. Lowest Sounds Hated When your child practices the piano, he is creating from seventy to seventy-five decibels of sound The vacuum cleaner does about as well, and so do°s your dog when he takes to barking. The radio runs a little higher, if you turn it up strong. Its usual range is from forty to eighty decibels. If you write on a typewriter in a small office, you are creating fortyfive decibels of noise. The average city home has a noise from thirty to fifty-five decibels but th? average country residence one of from thirty to only forty decibels. We now are getting down to the quiet end of our noise thermometer because thirty decibels is the amount of noise made by turning the page of a newspaper. A cat that is particularly good at purring can make thirty decibels of noise but the average cat succeeds in raising only twenty-five.
