—Dietz on Science — WHALE FAMINE IMPENDING, IS U. S. WARNING Extinction Looms, Due to Waste, Says Bureau of Fisheries. BY DAVID DIETZ Scripps-flouard Science Editor Whaling, ten-century-old industry, soon may be only a memory, and the whale something to be found only in museums and picture books. That is the warning of Dr. Lewis RadclifTe of the United States bureau of fisheries. In a report prepared for the American Chemical Society, Dr. RadclifTe points out that the treaty drawn up by the League of Nations to save the whaling industry has not yet been sanctioned by a sufficient number of countries to make it international law. He believes that the industry should be encouraged to manufacture whale meal for the feeding of cattle, hogs and poultry and that the better grades of whale meat should be marketed for human consumption. “In view of the unsettled oil mar~ ket, the present is an opportune time to impose restrictions requiring more complete utilization of all parts of the whale,” he savs. Oil Chief Product “This would slow down oil production, reduce the number of whales killed, and increase the production of whale meal, all of which would tend to Improve the present situation and safeguard the supply.” At the present time, there is little interest in whales except as a source oT oil. 'Dr. RadclifTe believes that the whale has many of the nutritional advantages generally attributed to fish. For while the whale is a mammal, and not a fish, he nevertheless lives in the ocean and feeds on marine life. Students of the whale fisheries of the world have observed the rapid rise and fall of whaling operations first in one area, then in another, Dr. Radcliffe says. Waste Is Lamented “They have noted with no little concern,” he continues, “the growing efficiency of man's operations in catching whales and the feverish intensity with which the whalers have increased their killings in the Antarctic, the last of the areas to be exploited. "Many economically minded persons have regretted the extremely wasteful practices of using but a single product of the whale such as oil, and have urged the necessity for control measures w'hich would insure the fullest possible utilization of these huge mammals. “The present depression in which the fats and oils market has been heavily overstocked and prices have fallen to extremely low' levels, with the urge to restrict whaling operations, has afforded a oreathing spell careful consideration of the needs for regulation.” WINS HONORS WITH FEET Unable to Use Arms Since Infancy, Man Given Degrees. Pit I'nitcd Presn LETHBRIDGE, Alberta, July 18. —W. R. Watson, deprived of the use of his hands and arms since infancy literally won t wo degrees from the University of Alberta with his feet and teeth. Watson early learned to write by holding a pen or pencil with his toes. At the university he took notes by holding his writing implements between his teeth. He now holds an A.B. and LL.B. degree from the provincial university and has written a book He shaves and eats with his feet, can handle a telephone receiver and dial with his feet, swims, skates, skiis. and can play a good “hand” of bridge with his feet. SWALLOWS SOFT BALL Kansas Boy Does Circus Trick, but Needs Doctor's Aid. i P>l I'nitcd Pres* STAFFORD. Kan. July 18.—Little Dickie Biege always had a lure for the circus, but little did his folks know he had the ability to become one of its performers. Auvway, Dickie got a good start toward swallower's job when he swallowed a soft rubber ball while playing. A doctor, however, had to come to his aid. fob I.A IT. lo CLASSIFY LEGAL NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING. PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSIONDOCKET NO. 39-C Application of Leslie F. Todd.
