—Let’s Go Fishing— OUTLOOK GOOD FOR FISHERMEN OVER WEEK-END Game Wardens Report Fair Sport in Rivers and Lakes of State. BY I-EFTY LEE Timr F.ihlru Fditnr A good time is promised by game wardens for anglers over the weekend. Fish in practically all streams are biting fairly good. Here we give you the condition of the streams and lakes as reported by them: Warden H. Walker, La Porte— Lakes and rivers are in fine shape an every angler is taking fish. Many of the catches show a limit of bass. Bluegill also are hitting in deep water. Warden Hael, Renssalaer—All streams are normal and most kinds of fish are biting, but would bite better if the weather were cooler. Fox squirrels, prairie chickens and quail are plentiful in Jasper and Newton counties, and hunters really should enjoy themselves when the season ftpens this fall. Warden Perley, Fulton and Pulaski counties—Tippecanoe river at Talma and Rochester is clear. At Monterey, Winnamac and Pulaski it is clear enough for good fishing. Bluegills have been biting some at Bruce lake on catalpa worms. Crappies continue to bite in all of Fulton county Lakes. Wardens Roth and McLean, Monticello—Silver bass are biting fair in both Shafer and Freeman lakes. Some small mouth bass were caught in the upper end of Lake Freeman Thursday. Warden Eaton, Warsaw—Fish are starting to strike again after a tenday layoff. Bluegill were biting good at Lake Caldwell, near Claypool and also at North Webster. Bass and perch are biting fine on DeWart lake. Dandy perch, at this lake Wednesday, weighing from one and one-half to two pounds. Wardens Anderson and Bennett, Rome City—All streams are low, but fishing conditions are good. Good catches of bass, crappie and bluegill are reported from Shipshewana lake. Bluegill, however, were rather small. Fishing in Marion county should be good, the streams being in good shape, even though a tritle low. Warden McCashland. Fayette, Franklin and Union Counties—West fork of Whitewater river to Laurel slightly muddy; clearing slowly. From Laurel to Brookville. very muddy. East w r ork of Whitewater river to Fairfield nearly clear, clearing slowly. Main stream from Brookville to New Trenton very muddy and low. Bass and catfish have stopped biting. Very few carp reported caught. Some of the larger creeks, such as Nolan's Fork, in Fayette; Blue, Pipe and Salt, in Franklin, and Hanna, in Union county, fairly clear anrl in better fishing sh-ape than Whitewater river. The fishing will be poor in Whitewater river for several days at least. Warden Casady, Shelby County— Brandywine. Big Sugar and Little Blue are clearing up. Flat Rock and Big Blue are muddy, but the fishing should be good over the week-end. Warden Morgan, Vigo, Parke and Vermillion Counties—Sugar, Broullette. Little Vermillion and Big Raccoon creeks and Wabash river are in fine shape, and fishing should be good over the week-end.

BY W. F.. M KENNEY RrcrMarT Ameriran Bridie league DOES the fact that you hold a definite number of high-card tricks necessarily fulfill the requirements for an original bid in the constructive one over one system? Certainly not. As I often have stated before, distribution is just as important a factor in contract as high-card tricks. As you know, in this system a first or second hand original bid shows a very fine hand. The bidding can be opened with a much weaker third or fourth hand —especially third hand—therefore before making an original first ct second hand bid you should say to yourself, ‘‘What will happen it I open the bidding with this hand and my partner responds with such and such a bid?” If you are not in a position to handle that response, then don’t make an original bid. It is far better to pass, and f hen, on the second round, make a highly constructive bid—or even a forcing bid —to show that your hand did contain a good number of high-card tricks but not the proper distribution for an original bid. Take for example the following hand. South, the dealer, holds three and one-half high-card tricks. However, the hand is not well balanced and therefore can not be

opened with an original bid of one no trump, and it has no biddable suit, so it must be passed. West also wouid pass. North will open the bidding with one club. Some players with the East hand would overcall with one spade. Personally I prefer the negative double, which gives a much better picture of your hard. South now shows that he passed quits a strong hand by bidding two no trump. North will go to three clubs, and South then will bid three no trump. u tt a WEST has a choice of openings. diamonds or. as his partner has made a negative double showing strength in spades, his original lead j can be the nine of spades. Without j an apparent entry card, I believe j I would prefer the nine of spades opening, A small spade will be played from dummy, East will win with the : queen and return the ace of spades. His next spade lead will be won i by South with the jack. South then leads a small club and wins in dummy with the king. He I returns a heart and takes the finesse, j locating the king. Another club is played toward I dummy. West plays the ten, and the declarer must refuse to win the : trick, and should play the three | from dummy. If the declarer makes the mis- | take of going up with the king of clubs, he then will have to lead a small club which West will win with the queen, and the two clubs in dummy will be dead, due to the fact j that there is no entry there. It’s a splendid mixture of creamy vanilla ie cream and juicy red cherries. •Epicures will rave about it, but you don’t need to be an epicure to appreciate it. If you’ve tried previous Furnas specials you’re probably already planning to order some Cherry Blossom from your neighborhood Furnas dealer, but if you’ve missed the others don’t delay longer. Call your dealer now and tell him to send you Furnas Cherry Blossom Ice Cream. Remember, too, that your Furnas dealer has a full line of regular Furnas flavors—as well as refreshing fountain specials at all times.
