STIMULANT FOR HEART AID IN POISON CASES Amyl Nitrite Antidote. City Scientists Prove in Experiments. r.U ftrlrnrr r- x t Amyl nitrite. well-known heart stimulant, is a better antidote in cyanide poisoning than the dye, methylene blue, it appears from experiments reported to The Journal of the American Medical Association by Drs. K K Chen and G. H. A. Clowes and Charles L. Rose of Indianapolis. These experiments indicate that amyl nitrite is at least twice as efficient an antidote to cyanide as the blu" dye It also is more eAsily given, since it may be administered by inhalation while the dye must be injected by hypodermic. The blue dye recently has been used with success in treating cases of both cyanide and carbon monoxide poisoning and has become the subject of considerable scientific discussion. The Indianapolis scientists started their investigations on amyl nitrite following reports of Dr. E. Hug and Dr. W. R. Wendel. The former showed that sodium nitrite was a better antidote for cyanide than methylene blue, and both Dr. Hug and Dr. Wendel. working independently, came to the conclusion that methylene blue neutralizes the effect of the poison by forming the compound, cyanmethemoglobin. ftrirnrr Srr > Ire WASHINGTON, July 14. Methylene blue as an antidote lor cyanide or carbon monoxide poisoning is now the subject of a heated controversy between scientists. The blue dye received its first trial as poison antidote in California Several cases in which the treatment has been successful have been reported from San Francisco and elsewhere. Its use became routine in the emergency hospitals of the San Francisco health'department for cases in which the patients were brought, in apparently dying from the effects of one or the other of these two deadly poisons. Strenuous objection of this use of the dye has been brought forward by other scientists within the last few months. Statements were made that the blue dye, instead of saving lives of carbon monoxide

victims, might actually hasten death and that its use at least was decidedly limited in cases of cyanide poisoning. Experiments supporting these statements have been reported in scientific literature, as well as experiments supporting the value of the dye as an antidote for cyanide and carbon monoxidp. For a time the use of the dye was suspended by the emergency hospital service of the San Francisco health department. Asa result of further consultation and clinical experience, however, the treatment now has been resumed.
