By DAVID DIETZ Srripps-Hnward Science Editor Quantity production in atom smashing is the big need of the world today. The scientist wh turns the trick will go down in history as one of the world’s greatest inventors, for he will make the energy of the atom available to turn the wheels of industry and transportation. Scientists have settled beyond any reasonable doubt that it is passible to smash or disintegrate certain atoms in such a way that more energy is released by the disintegration than is consumed in causing it. Writing from Chicago last week where I heard the foremost scientists engaged in these experiments report on their work at the summer session of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, I referred to atom smashing as an artillery game. Marksmanship Is Poor You fire particles of subatomic size at the atoms you wish to smash. The particles may be electrons, neutrons, the nuclei of hydrogen or helium atoms. But the trouble is that your marksmanship isn’t very good. You smash an atom only when you make a direct hit and you fire thousands upon thousands of particles to get one hit. In the gross, therefore, you are using up a great deal of energy to release only a very, very little. The need is for an inventor who can improve marksmanship. An inventor also is needed to improve the power sources for these atomsmashing experiments. Scientists, of course, are alert to this fact, and many of them are working upon the subject. Electrons Are "Ammunition” In the original experiments, as, for example, those of Lord Rutherford, the only known source of swiftly-moving particles was radium and the other radio-active substances. Radium, because its atoms are disintegrating spontaneously, gives off three kinds of rays, one of which consists of alpha particles or the nuclei of helium atoms. These were used as the bombarding particles in the original experiments. Next, swiftly moving electrons were used. These were produced in vacuum tubes by the use of extremely high voltages. An electric .current is a stream of electrons. The higher the voltage, the faster the electron stream moves. Vacuum Tubes Favored Another method is to subject particles, the nuclei of h£avy hydrogen atoms or deutons, for example, to intense magnetic fields. This is the method used with so much success by Professor E. O. Law'rence and his associates at the University of California. In their experiments, the deutons are caught up in the magnetic field and whirled around, like a stone in a slingshot, until they obtain tremendous velocities. The chances for “quantity production" seem best at this time with the vacuum tube method, providing that some fairly inexpensive way can be devised to develop the needed voltages. RECOVERY BILL SPURS ORGANIZING OF UNIONS Nation-Wide Campaigns to Draw Thousands of New Members. Bn Srripps-Hotcarii Xncspapcr Alliance WASHINGTON, July 4.—Although hampered by lack of funds and general unpreparedness, union labor has launched a nation-wide organizing campaign to draw into its ranks hundreds of thousands of new members, from new unions, and prepare to deal collectively with industry under the new recovery act. According to Vice-President Frank Morrison of the American Federation of Labor, organization campaigns are under way in all of the 108 international unions. Most active are organizers in the coal, auto, rubber, steel, textile and clothing industries, where efforts arc afoot to form strong and unified industrial groups. President John L. Lewis of the United Miners claims the record so far. The min? leader today declared that, his organizers signed up 250,000 new members by July 1, that in spite of oposition by the Mellons. Rockefellers and others, miners are flocking as never before into the unions, that by the end of summer he hopes to see 600.000 bituminous and anthracite miners unionized. FORD’S BATTLE WITH BANKERS MAY BE AIRED Senate Committee May Probe Charge ‘Wall Street’ Out to ‘Get’ Auto Maker. BY LYLE C. WILSON United Press Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, July L—Henry Ford's feud with powerful banking interests which, he cha.ges, are seeking control of his automobile company, has been proposed to the senate stock market investigating committee for inquiry. Both Chairman Duncan U. Fletcher and Ferdinand Pecora, counsel of the investigating committee, have read the statement of Herbert R. Wilkins, Detroit banker, that Wall Street engineered the bank holiday to “get Ford.” May Probe Detroit Situation Wilkins charged that the bankers sought to tie up Ford’s deposits, estimated at $60,000,000, to compel Ford to seek loans. Since the panicky, period of 192021, Ford has kept cash on hand sufficient to carry him through almost any emergency without appeal to banks. It is said the auto manufacturer does not owe a cent. “We might go into the whole Detroit banking situation in October.” Chairman Fletcher said. “It Would depend on developments out there. I have read the Wilkins charges, and they have been brought to the attention of the committee. If he can furnish proof, we’ll possibly investigate it, but we can’t go into any hazy charges where no proof is available.” Traveling Quiz Voted Down ‘‘lt would be a pertinent inquiry to make,” Pecora said. “I have noted the general charges, and will give the subject study. It certainly is within the scope of our investigation. and Wilkins may be called next fall.” Before adjourning last week until July 6. the committee discussed the advisability of a swing around the circle of major cities to inquire into complaints received since hearings began. At that time it was decided without a record roll call that a traveling investigation would not be warranted.
