—Dietz on Science— NEW THEORY ON UNIVERSE BARED AT CONVENTION Data Revealed by Savant Seen as Outstanding in Two Decades. BY DAVID DIETZ Seripp.-Howard Selenre Editor CHICAGO, June 30.—The meeting of the American Association for the advancement of Science, now in session here, may go down in scientific history as the gathering at which Dr. Neils Bohr announced his “theory of complementarity. - ’ This new theory made public here for the first time by Dr. Bohr of Copenhagen, world-famous physicist and Nobel prize winner, may become as important in the world of science as the theory of relativity. In fact, it is regarded by many scientists as the first step toward f.n all-inclusive theory which will wield into a unified whole the theory of relativity, the quantum theory, the uncertainty principle and other theories of the last two decades. Put in its simplest form, the theory means that nature has a dual structure, two sides which complement or supplement each other like the outside and the inside of a sphere. Measurement Is Impossible The theory holds further that it is impossible for a man to measure or record the two aspects of any natural event. Any set of measurements which disclose the one aspect make it impossible to detect the complementary aspect. In fact, in so far as the observer is concerned, the complementary aspect might just as well be nonexistent for the time being. The theory will be disappointing to many philosophers because it is another step in the direction of the view that man can never hope to understand the absolute facts of the universe. But this view’ already was inherent in relativity and in the uncertainty principle. To understand Bohr’s theory of complementarity, we must review briefly the theoretical development which led up to it. We can begin with the quantum theory as announced by Dr. Max Planck and developed by Einstein. Energy Is Like Bullets This held that energy did not exist in continuous waves but consisted of little particles or bullets known as quanta or photons. But side by side with this new theory, there still remained all the old experiments in which light, a form of energy, behaved precisely as though it consisted of waves. From that day to this, no one has been able to disprove either view. In certain experiments, energy undoubtedly behaves like particles, in other experiments it behaves like waves. But side by side with this new Bohr his first fame, the Bohr theory of the atom. This theory held that the electrons in an atom revolved in orbits whose size was controlled by the numberr of quanta of energy the electrons possessed. Violates All Theories An electron emitting energy jumped from one orbit to another, apparently making the jump with no interval of time. The Bohr theory of the atom in almost every detail violated the classical or traditional theory of mechanics. Here was another case of contradictory data. Then came the theory of relativity with its statements that no experiment is possible w'hich will

TWO SCHOOLS MERGED Township to Rave SIO,OOO by Plan, Asserts Trustee. By T'nUed Preti i UPLAND. Ind., June 30.—Consolidation of two township schools here next fall will effect a savings of SIO,OOO, Virgil Ritter, township trustee, announced. The schools are five miles apart, but teachers will alternate between them, having rribrning classes in one and afternoon classes at the other. James A. Pugh, Upland principal, will be in charge of both. Failure of the Upland bank where the townships’ money was kept, and reduction of receipts from local tax sources cause the consolidation. measure absolute velocity, absolute length or absolute time. Relativity was followed in 1925 with the anouncement, of the uncertainty principle by Professor Werner Heisenberg of Leipzig. This theory dealt a terrific jolt to the old mechanistic views of ordered cause and effect in the realm of the atom. Bohr's new theory does the same for the whole universe.
