—Dietz on Science — SCIENTISTS NOW CREATE MATTER OUTJHNERGY Tests Made by Winner of Nobel Prize Explained. BY DAVID DIETZ Sericps-Howard Science Editor CHICAGO. June 29.—Scientists have succeeded in creating matter out of energy. This is the interpretation placed by Dr. Neils Bohr of Denmark, Nobel prize winner and one of the world's greatest physicists, upon certain experiments first performed at the California Institute of Technology in the laboratory of another Nobel prize wanner, Dr. Robert A. Millikan. Dr. Bohr explained his views before the gathering of American and European scientists who are attending the summer session of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His theory demands an entirely new view of the positron, the particle which resembles the electron in size and weight but differs from it in electrical charge. The positron has a positive electric charge while the electron has a negative charge. The positron was discovered by Dr. Anderson in Dr. Millikan’s laboratory while photographing the effects of collisions between cosmic rays and atoms of lead. Triumph for Einstein It was assumed that the positron was knocked out of the nucleus of the atom by the cosmic ray. Later, is was found by Dr. Anderson that positrons were released when gamma rays of radium were used to bombard atoms of lead. Gamma rays are like X-rays only thousands of times shorter. Dr. Bohr rejects the idea that the positron is released from the nucleus of the lead atoms. In fact, he even prefers not to use the name positron at all. Dr. Bohr’s name for the positron is the anti-electron. His reason for this is that the positron never appears alone. When lead atoms are bombarded with gamma rays a positron and an electron always appear simultaneously. Both of them moreover, move in the same direction. Dr. Bohr believes that both the positron, or anti-electron as he calls it, and the electron, are produced simultaneously by the conversion of the gamma ray into the two particles.
Ray Is ‘Crumpled Up’ Something happens when the gamma ray hits the nucleus of the lead atom. It is crumpled up, to use a picturesque but perhaps unscientific description of the incident. It breaks into two parts, one becoming an electron and the other antielectron, the counterpart of an electron. This view, incidently, consists of one more major triumph for the great theorist, Professor Albert Einstein. While Einstein is best known to the general public as the author of i the theory of relativity, he is equal- | ly famous in scientific circles for a number of other theories. One of these is the theory of the equivalence of mass and energy. This theory, which upset traditional views of the universe quite as drastically as did the theory of relativity held that matter and energy were interchangeable and could be converted one into the other. During the past two decades—for the theory was announced in 1905 scientists had no experimental proof of it ,but it was used by them in an of it, but it was used by them in an the universe. HOWELL ELLIS’OPENS UTILITY LAW OFFICE Former Commissioner, Engineer Form Partnership. Howell Ellis, former Republican member of the public service commission, has entered the practice of utility law. He announced today the formation of the firm of Ellis & Gunther, public utility counselors. 619 Illinois building. W. J. Gunther, partner in the firm, was formerly a public service commission engineer. Ellis was retired from the commission with the completion of the reorganization by Governor Paul V. McNutt. He was serving a second term. COHN NAMED "RECEIVER Stock Broker Takes Over Firm Owning Bank Structure. Receiver for the company owning the building at 129 East Market street, formerly occupied by the J. F. Wild & Company State bank, was named Wednesday by Superior Judge William A. Pickens. Leonard Cohn, local stock broker, received the appointment, after hearing on a petition brought by Richard McClellan, a stockholder in the realty company owning the building. Insolvency of the company has been induced by reduced rentals and vacancies, preventing payment of stock dividends, the complaint alleged.
