That is the proposal of Dr. W. F. G. Swann, famous physicist and director of the Barto] Research Foundation of the Franklin Institute of Philadelphia. Radio fans who are familiar with "ether waves," need not fear, however, that their sets will stop workins? it scientists adopt the proposal of Dr. Swann. For, while we speak of ether waves, no one has ever seen it, weighed it, or otherwise identified it. Present-day scientists can abolish the ether because it was the scientists of a previous generation who invented it. The ether is what is known as a "hypothetical medium.” The word first was used by the Greeks who divided the atmosphere into the lower air which men breathed and an upper layer of greater purity which they called the ether. After the Greeks, the ether was practically forgotten until the nineteenth century physicists revived it. In the nineteenth century, the wave theory of light was firmly established. Decide Space Is Filled If the light consisted of waves it was thought that these waves must travel on something. Later radio waves were discovered. It also was necessary to provide a medium upon which they waves might travel. And so, the physicists decided that all space must be filled with a medium, which could not otherwise be identified or detected, but which would serve the purpose of providing a medium—a fluid, so to speak—in which these waves could travel. Dr. Swann believes that the time has come for scientists to stop talking about the ether. He defines it as “a medium invented by man for the purpose of propagating his misconceptions from one place to another.’ Theories Are Confused Attempts by scientists, philosophers, and laymen to picture the ether have led to all sorts of confusing theories, according to Dr. Swann. “One would have liked to think of the ether as like water; but that would not do, because the kind of waves which water would transmit were quite different from those required for light,” he says. "A solid would have been better for the purposqfc of light, but how would it be possible for the earth and all the other planets to glide so smoothly through a solid? How could a medium act like the most limpid of fluids and the most rigid of solids? "Now, it was perfectly possible to express mathematically the laws according to which light and allied phenomenons behaved in all the experiments in which they played a part; but the equations looked cold and lifeless. Equations Not Satisfactory “It was indeed possible to define the properties of a medium which, in the form of waves, would transmit effects which v’cre the counterpart of the observed effects; but the properties necessary to attribute to the medium were such that there was nothing else anything like it," he said. And so, Dr. Swann points out, both laymeen and scientists, not satisfied to stop with the mathematical equations, undertook to make pictures of the ether. Then the trouble began.
3,000 Baseball Tickets * Vanish ’ in Lottery Case
Alleged Owners Are Freed by State During Hearing. The mystery of what has happened to approximately 3,000 books of baseball pool tickets was intriguing; attaches and spectators in municipal court three today when Floyd Newman and Oscar Moore were discharged on motion of the state on charges of operating a lottery. Newman and Moore were arrested in a raid by Lieutenant Dan Cummings and squad shortly after Chief Mike Morrissey ordered an. investigation of a report that a police officer had won a SI,OOO prize in a baseball pool. Today, Paul Rochford, attorney for Newman and Moore, put Cummings on the stand for a preliminary examination after questioning the legality of the arrest without a search warraut. "Y’ou didn't bring those tickets into court, did you?" asked Rochford. " Don't answer that question,” interjected Jacob Steinmetz, deputy prosecutor. "There’s no question before the court.” “Well, I'll make the lieutenant a witness for the defense, too,” offered Rochford. Steinmeetz met this proposal with a motion to nolle the case and Dewey Meyers, judge pro tern., was forced to discharge both defendants. A gaming case involving Newman, as a result of a raid on his poolroom at 401 Virginia avenue, still is pending. SECRET FUNDS IN MEYER-KISER BANK SOUGHT Garvin Opens Probe After Court Testimony on Hidden Money. Thomas E. Garvin, receiver of the defunct Meyer-Kiser bank, assisted by atorneys and auditors, today is sifting a mass of information regarding affairs of the institution. After a week’s session, a hearing before Circuit Judge Earl R. Cox, at which former officials of the bank testified, was adjourned indefinitely late Tuesday. The adjournment was taken on a verbal petition of Garvin, who explained to the court that further investigation was necessary on disclosures revealed by the bank officials. Reveal New Assets Mast important of the facts in Garvin’s possession are new assets with a book of $545,000. The assets represent the bank's share in a secret reserve fund created by former officers. Determination of the present value of the new assets and the amount which may be added to the receivership funds wall engage Garvin's immediate attention, he said. Form of questioning by William B. Miller and Saul Rabb, attorneys for depositors’ groups, throughout the hearing indicates that suits may be instituted to collect on blanket indemnity bonds covering acts of the bank officials. Suits May Be Filed No definite declaration to sue has been made by the attorneys, however, and it is believed that the recess period will be used in studying testimony for preparation of complaints. Association of the defunct bank with the international banking firm of J. P. Morgan & Cos. was disclosed by M. S. Cohn, former vice-presi-dent, with the declaration that the local institution acted as agent for the Morgan interests in disposing of securities. Securities floated by Morgan were purchased by the bank officials for re-sale to local investors whenever the issues were believed appealing to the bank’s customers, Cohn said.
