—Dietz on Science— LARGEST X-RAY TUBE PLACED IN OPERATION Therapy Hospital to Use Device for Treatment of Cancer. BY DAVID DIET/ SrrlDD^-Iloward Scipnr* F.ditor The most powerful X-ray tube ever put to practical use has just been installed in the Merry hospital institute of radiation therapy in Chicago. It is to be used for the treatment of cancer. The tube operates at an electrical pressure of 800.000 volts and will furnish penetrating rays equivalent to those which would be emitted by a mass of radium, which at current prices would cost, $75,000,000. It is housed in a special wins? of the hospital, the walls, floor and ceiling of which are lined wi’h forty tons of lead. The patient, while under treatment, will be in a special leadlined chamber. As this gigantic tube goes into use, it is interesting to look back to the early days of the X-ray, for their discovery by Professor Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen occurred on Nov. 8, 1895, a date within the memory of many readers. Collects Varied Data Dr. Otto Glasser of the Cleveland clinic, who is an authority upon the history of the X-ray as well as a well-known authority in the field of the X-ray, has collected some interesting information about the early reception of the X-ray by the general public. “A veritable flood of articles on the new ‘wonder rays’ appeared in rapid succession in the press of the whole world,” Dr. Glasser says. “I have been able to collect over a thousand articles on X-rays which appeared in scientific journals during the year 1890. ' Among the general public, according to Dr. Glasser, there was a general fear that X-rays made it passible to look through things, for example, to look through a solid wall as one might look through a window, or to look through clothing. Women Made Prey I)r Glasser tells that, a bid was introduced into the house of representatives of the state of New Jcr. y to prohibit the use of X-rays in opera glasses at theaters, while a London firm “made prey of the ignorant women by advertising the sale of X-ray proof underclothing.” Dr. Glasser quotes a most amazing editorial which appeared in the Pall Mall Gazette of London. It read in part: "We arc sick of the Roentgen rn\ . It is now said, we hope untruly, that Mr. Edison has discovered a substance— tungstate of calcium is the repulsive name—which is potential, whatever that means, to the said rays. Blasted in Editorial "Perhaps the best thing would be for all civilized nations to combine to burn all works on the Roentgen rays, to execute all thr discoverers, and to corner all the tungstate in the world and whelm it in the middle of the ocean. Let the fish contemplate each other’s bones if they like, but not us." The old editorial just quoted is of interest for a number of reasons. It is more than a museum piece of folly and nonsense. It helps to explain why there was, for so many years, a great gap between the world of science and the world of laymen. It explains why scientists for many years were wary of talking about their discoveries and why the first pioneers of popular science had such hard work.

June 19.—Three j states will elect delegates Tuesday | to conventions to vote on repeal of : the eighteenth amendment. One of i them, lowa, will give the movement for repeal the most severe test it has faced yet. lowans will vote for ninety-nine delegates to a constitutional convention. Split tickets are not possible under the procedure arranged by the legislature, and either ninetynine wets or ninety-nine drys will be ! elected. Dry forces have conducted a i strong campaign to keep the once | thoroughly dry state in the prohibij t ion column. Governor Clyde L. \ Herring predicts a victory for re- ' peal. Wet Connecticut regarded the election of fifteen delegates at large and one from each senatorial district almost as a matter of routine, with even dry leaders refusing to forecast a dry victory. Drys conducted a brisk campaign in the third state. New Hampshire, once dry, but observers generally forecast a wet victory. The New Hampshire legislature has shown | decided wet tendencies this year. Ten convention delegates will elected at large. Mcßride Is Confident lilt I nit 111 I'r.-M WASHINGTON. June 19,-Super-intendent F. Scott Mcßride of the Anti-Saloon League today discounted the clean sweep of wet forces in the eleven state elections held thus far on prohibition repeal and expressed confidence that the drys can block repeal if they get out and fight. Mcßride charged that the wets engineered the elections so the Ist rongiy anti - prohibition states would vote first. Os the states that have voted so far, seven were wet before prohibition, he pointed out. But of the 37 still to vote. 29 were under state prohibition when the eighteenth amendment was adopted. The drys need to hold only thirteen states to retain the eighteenth amendment. None of the southern states has voted yet and it is there that the prohibitionists are most hopeful of victory. The first test in the south will come in Alabama on July 18. Three states are voting tomorrow—lowa, Connecticut and New Hampshire.
