WIDER ROADS NEED OF STATE, CLAIMSADAMS Right-of-Way to Be Extended Past 60 Feet, Says Highway Director. Asa safety measure to cut down Indiana’s rapidly mounting acci-dent-death rate, the Indiana state highway department proposes to widen many of the state's highways, according to James Adams, state highway director. This part of the department's program was explained to county commissioners at a district conference at the Severin Thursday afternoon. “We are going to increase the right -of - way past 60 feet average,” Adams stated, “because we feel we must look to future needs of the motorists. Michigan Far Ahead "I am convinced Indiana has made a mistake in not making her roads wide enough.” After inspecting roads in several states, he said he was convinced Michigan is ahead of other states in road construction. The Michigan road width is a 120foot standard, he explained. “There is no doubt,” he said, “but that Indiana lays the finest type of concrete slab in the country. Other states have asked how we get such a smooth riding surface.” Discuss Construction Road construction was the topic at the conference at u 7 hich Thomas H. Ellis, Marion county commissioner and president of the Indiana County Commissioners’ Association, presided. Other speakers were Edward Cooper, of the state board of accounts; J. P. Johnson, Indianapolis, road material contractor; Earl Kiger, Indianapolis school supply dealer; Bruce Short, Marion county surveyor; Donald Hilt, Hancock county auditor, and Warren Rumford, of the J. D. Adams Company, Indianapolis. Be sure and read the Want Ad page tonight. There are hundreds of money-saving bargains listed in the ads.

McNutt Misses Parade! Reaches Fair Hour Late
Details Trickle Out With Return From Chicago of Observers. BY DANIEL M. KIDNEY Times Staff Writer Governor Paul V. McNutt missed a parade! That was last Saturday, but details only reached the statehouse today with return of several persons from A Century of Progress exposition at Chicago. They report that the Governor not only missed the delegation awaiting him at the gates there Saturday, but arrived an hour late with a high hat, high temper and a semiwilted collar. He blamed Richard Lieber, whose arrangements went awry. Here is the story: McNutt was scheduled to speak on the program in which the Indiana exhibit was presented to the fair. Notables come in the Fourteenth street gate, while the crowd comes in at Twelfth street. But the Governor had two charts from Lieber showing he was to be greeeted at
the Twelfth street entrance. So he arrived there on time. But the automobile caravan (special permission having been procured to drive cars by the reception committee) awaited at the Fourteenth street gate. In despair the Governor hiked the mile or more through the crowd to the Indiana show. Arriving he flaunted the charts at Lieber, who explained that the gate shift had been made later and he had sent a courier to inform the Governor. BEATEN BY HOODLUMS Postal Employe Attacked When He Objects to Cursing on Sidewalk. When he objected to cursing by four sidewalk hoodlums, Chester L. Rigsby, 26, Louisville postal emplaye, was “beaten up” Thursday night on Illinois street near the Union station, he told police. The men. after beating Rigsby, fled in a taxicab. Police later arrested Earl Shome, 35, of 824 North East street, cab driver, who brought Rigsby's coat to police headquarters.
