Dodgers Bow to Reds, Tumble to Seventh; Lefty Grove Wins Again
BY JACK tIDDY I'nitrd Prs Staff CorrcuDondent NEW’ YORK May 26—Brooklyn's Dodgers, picked by some experts to win the National League pennant this season, have slipped toward the cellar because of the collapse of their outfield. Six defeats in their last seven starts dropped them into seventh place Thursday. Unless the flychasers snap out of their slump, or unless Manager Max Carey reorganizes the outfield, even w’orse is in prospect. Carey is considering that very thing, and the first man he may yank out is none other than the league's leading batsman of 1932, Lefty O'Doul. who is playing poorly afield and has made only eight hits in thirty-eight trips to the plate on the Dodgers’ western tour. O'Doul has been holding down the left-field post and Hack Wil-

COFFIN municipal golf links will re-open Saturday after a “forced-out-of-business” spell due to the recent floods. Strange as it may read, the recent heavy rains followed by sunshine have put the links back in good condition and except for a slightly swampy condition in two small spots the course is high, dry and playable. tt tt tt Arthur G. I,ockwoo<l. the city rolf director, ha had all the bridges repaired and the greens appear to be in almost perfect condition. A little dampness at the foot of the seventeen green and a little on the tenth fairway are all that remain of the high tide. That the course is to reopen wilt he good news to many and the celebration will start tonight when the recently organized Coffin Golf Club will meet in the pro shop and do more arranging for the coming season. Ail the members and prospective members are asked to be on hand. tt tt tt Something happened in a fivesome at Highland Thursday that rarely happens in twosomes, threesomes or even at all. Joe Stout, Dr. M. E. Clark and Max Buell were the performers of this unusual stum and it happened on the fifteenth hole. Stout was twenty reet, from the pin with his tee shot. “Doc" Clark was just inside him and Buell was about six feet from the can. Stout putted and the little pellet din t falter on its trip into the cup. Clark i putted just as well and the burden was on Buell. He did and three duces on any one hole, one after another is usual, | to sav the least. tt a tt If you remember our statement the | other day about Neat Mclntyre, big Highj land pro, being on the way out of the J golf dumps, which was evidenced to us ! when he fired a record 31 on the back J nine Tuesday, here’s confirmation: Par at Highland is 1(1. 33 each way. and j on Thursday. Neal clipped two strokes off ! of each side to go out in 33 and back in j the same number. | Those of you who recall the western ! open at Highland several years ago when lighthorse Harry Cooper did a 66 and | Walter Hagen duplicated. realize the toughness of nounding out rounds of four under par. The performances of Mclntyre recently indicate he is out after another state open championship and just a little item In his swing was all that ailed his game this spring. With that ironed out, the other boys in the open field at Speedway. June 22 and 23. had better watch out. a tt tt MERIDIAN HILLS members have a big week end planned | for the coming Saturday and Sunday. The Duffers Delight tournament. an eighteen-hole five par substitution affair, will be held for the men, who are privileged to play | on either of the two days, and a mixed two-ball foursome will be j staged on Sunday, to give the ladies a chance to get into action. tt tt a South Grove will engage in two team | matches, one at Anderson. Sunday at l 1:30. for team A members, which will be I a sixteen-man affair and the other for team C with Knightstown. a twelve-man affair. Avalon and Broadmoor are passing up this week-end. but have special flag day tournaments scheduled for Tuesday, Memorial day, and these are always will attended and interesting. tt tt tt The Indiana College Conference state tournament is on today over the Allandale course in Terre Haute, better known as the Terre Haute Country Club. son and Danny Taylor have been occupying the center field post, with neither accomplishing much. Johnny Frederick, in right field, represents the only strength in the pickets. He has been doing a fair job in the field and batting .361. The Dodgers landed in seventh place Thursday when beaten, 4 to 1, by Cincinnati, as Paul Derringer, recently acquired from St. Louis, turned in his first victory of the season. The Reds moved into fourth place. Chicago jumped tom seventh to fifth place by blanking Boston. 3 to 0, behind Pat Malone’s two-hit pitching.
