$40,390 ANNUAL SAVING CREDIT GIVEN TO CANAL Value Stressed by Water Company at Hearing on Rates. The canal mean? a savins of £4O 390 a year to the Indianapolis Water company, it was testified in federal court today, in the company's, suit for higher rates, by Malcolm Pirnie, consulting engineer. Pirnie said that $8,392 is saved through use of the canal, south of the filter beds, to provide hydraulic power at the Washington street pumping station, and $35,070 through elimination of the cost of pumping water into the filter beds of the filters. On the basis of 7 per cent, this should mean more than $600,000 in the capitalization, he said.

BOAST that he "drinks out of the same bottle with ’judge Sheaffer' - failed to do Arnold Lawis, 30. of 1530 Wilcox street, any good when he was arraigned in niumeipß] court four toda” before Judge William H. Teague said Lewis airily snapped his fingers when he said the arrest “didn't amount to that.” As he listened to this testimony, Sheaffer's face was becoming a rich crimson.
Almost apoplectic with indignation, he leaned over the bar. or rather the bench, and lashed Lewis scornfully. cused Lewis vehemently. “You know that's not true. You're the kind of a loafer I like to have brought in here ” Under questioning. Lewis denied the remark about "drinking out of the same bottle." He explained what ne said was: "I'm a friend of the judge. I thought I could fix it up all right.” Sheaffer again assailed Lewis. "When did you get to be a friend of mine? I don't even know your name.” he declared. "I fine you $25 and costs and there'll be no probation.” Lewis couldn't pay the fine so he was taken to jail.
