REMOVE WARTS IN CLINIC BY USE OTRUSE' Simple Water Injection Is Found Cure for Most Patients. BY JOSEPH MITCHELL Tim** Special Writer NEW YORK, May 19.—Warts have be&n removed in the New York Post Graduate Medical School and Hospital's skin clinic by a form of hypnotism, in which the patient receives no treatment except an innocuous injection of plain water, it was announced last night by Dr. Joseph L. Morse, dermatologist, of the clinic's staff, at a meeting of physicians in Midtown hospital. “Farmers used to cure warts by rubbing them with an Irish potato,’’ said Dr. Morse. “Country children used to cure warts by rubbing them with a stone taken from a graveyard when the moon was full. Our research indicates that these superstitions have a basis in fact. “We now believe that warts are caused by germs. For example, 'f the liquid obtained by the maceration of a wart is injected into a susceptible person, a wart is produced on the spot of injection. However, we have never been able to isolate the germ. “Warts are most effectively cured by surgery. Almost 98 per cent may be eliminated with the knife. X-rays are almost as efficient. Lately, scientists have been using an injection ! Os sulpharsphenamine. “Approximately 85 per cent of warts disappeared after from one 1 to three injections of this drug, 1 and the same result was obtained j with a form of bismuth. “You can imagine how surprised ! we were giving them a drug of some j kind. If there are several remedies ' equally efficient it is best to use \ the most innocuous. That is what we are doing. “We have found that perhaps the | first person to use psychotherapy in treating warts was Dr. Bruno Bloch, a Zurich dermatologist, who took patients into a dark room, blindfolded them set a motor or any noise making machine running, painted some kind of coloring on the wart, and then told the patient he would be well in a few days. He cured 8-5 per cent of his patients.” No Scars Left Dr. Morse said the hypnotic treatment has no disadvantages. However, the surgical method leaves scars and the drugs used in the regular Injections are dangerous, he said. There are three kinds of warts—the most common is the verruca vulgaris, the warts which appear on hands. Flat warts are those which cause no ridge. The plantar, which appears on soles of feet, causes misshapen feet, because victims turn their feet as they walk, Dr. Morse said. * Dr. Morse believes that the shock of the injection causes the cure. He! thinks that suggestion, the physician j impressing the patient with the in- j fallibility of a cure, has no bearing : on wart cures.
