ROOSEVELT TO PRESS QUIZ ON SHOALS MISUSE Concerned by Extent of Damage Alleged Due to Private Firms. BV RAY TICKER Tim** Sd'cial Writer WASHINGTON, May 19. The Roosevelt administration is concerned more deeply over the extent of damage to Muscle Shoals property through alleged misuse by pivate power companies, than over the financial loss now under official investigation. It is pointed out that the Alabama power project really is a military plant, built and operated under the national defense act for n rate production, and that it ; would become a vital military cen- j ter in event of war. Roosevelt Keenly Interested For that reason, it is under supervision of the war department, and whether army engineers in; rharge knew of alleged misuse and damage is a matter of grave concern. President Roosevelt keenly is interested for several reasons. The $150,000,000 plant and dam form thp keystone of the Tennessee basin development under the bill he signed Thursday. Senator George W. Norris 'Rep,, N’eb ), who laid the original complaint before the President, is disturbed because the alleged practices may have tended to discredit Muscle Shoals and government operation of power plants. Thompson to Head Probe With the two companies Alabama Power Company and Tennessee Electric Power Company-said to have bought less energy from the government because of the alleged exchange of their own power through the Muscle Shoals switch house, it furnished an argument that the private supply was more than sufficient even in the vicinity of the government's greatest hydroelectric experiment. / The facts leading to the presidential investigation, as reported exclusively in the Scripps-Howard newspapers, are confirmed by the White House and Secretary Harold L. Ickes. Hustin Thompson, federal trade commission member in the Wilson administrtion, probably will head the investigating commission. Wins Reward for Salesmanship .John Frohbeiter of the National Battery Company of Evansville was presented with a silver loving cup at the annual spring meeting of one hundred Willard distributors and salesmen from Indiana at, the Lincoln, Thursday. Frohbeiter was re- ; warded for the highest rating during the sales year.
