NEW MEXICO'S GOVERNOR MAY ENTERJSENATE Mode of Self Appointment May Take Seligman to Washington. By F'-rlppt.ffoirnrii Vi ripnper AlUonre WASHINGTON. May 12. The United States senate may win another Governor after the current fashion of self-appointment. Following the appointment of Senator Bratton, New Mexico Democrat. to the federal appellate bench, it is learned that Governor Seligman of that state is considering resigning and having his successor, Lieutenant - Governor Hockenhull, name him to Bratton's seat. Bratton will remain in his seat until adjournment, when, it is predicted, Governor Seligman will "don the toga.’’ Governor Seligman is a middleaged, mild-mannered man. Although a banker of Santa Fe he has been a Democrat of the liberal wing, and always has had the support, of labor. His tw'o terms as chief executive have made him popular in his state, particularly among the politicians. Should Governor Seligman come to Washington he would have to run for election two years hence. Senator Cutting, progressive Republican, runs again at the same time. Senator Cutting and Governor Seligman are of different parties, but are regarded as political allies. The method of resigning a governorship to be named senator by a successor is becoming common. The latest senator owing his seat to such a political fillip is former Governor Erickson of Montana, successor to the late Senator Walsh.
